Minus 84.1 Celsius: Antarctica Records Planet's Lowest Temperature in Fourteen Years

On July 18, 2026, the automatic weather station at the Franco-Italian Concordia research base recorded minus 84.1 degrees Celsius. Temperatures on Earth had not been colder since 2012, when minus 84.2 degrees was registered at Russia's Vostok Station.

This, however, did not set a new record, and it's important not to overstate its significance. Concordia's own lowest temperature, minus 84.7 degrees, was recorded on August 13, 2010; the recent reading fell short of that by six-tenths of a degree. Among all readings from the station since observations began in 2005, this July measurement ranks third. Temperatures regularly drop below minus 80 degrees here during winter, so this figure itself doesn't deviate from the seasonal pattern.

Nevertheless, it cannot be considered an ordinary occurrence either. “Even here, where severe frost is commonplace, a temperature below minus 84 remains noteworthy,” Gabriele Carugati, an atmospheric chemist and glaciologist with the Italian National Antarctic Research Program and shift leader, told Live Science. According to him, such episodes highlight the continent's persistently variable weather.

For the mercury to drop so low, several conditions must align simultaneously, and in July, they all did. The station is situated on Dome C, an elevated area of the East Antarctic Plateau, at an altitude of 3,230 meters and approximately one thousand kilometers from the nearest coast, meaning the moderating influence of the Southern Ocean does not reach it. Beneath the structures lies more than three kilometers of ice. Polar night is underway: the sun remains below the horizon for about 105 days, and external energy input is zero. Furthermore, the air was extremely dry—the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is not merely cold, it is one of the planet's most arid regions, and water vapor is the primary heat-retaining gas. Add cloudless skies and a stable anticyclone without air mixing, and heat radiates from the surface directly into space, unimpeded.

The raw data for July 18 was provided by the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor, which operates the station jointly with the Italians. The reading of minus 84.1 was recorded twice, with a nine-minute interval, at 6:25 AM and 6:34 AM.

Concordia is often called the most isolated inhabited place on the planet, and this is no exaggeration. Once winter sets in, no aircraft can land there: neither to bring in supplies nor to evacuate personnel. Its closest neighbors are the polar researchers at Vostok Station, six hundred kilometers away.

This is precisely why the station is used as a terrestrial analogue for deep space expeditions: a confined group with no escape, four months without light, impossible evacuation, and chronic oxygen deprivation—the polar atmosphere is more rarefied than at the same altitude in mid-latitudes, causing the body to function as if the station were significantly higher than its 3,230 meters. The European Space Agency stations a research physician here every winter, and the winter-over crew has long been nicknamed “ice astronauts.”

The absolute minimum for direct measurements still belongs to Vostok Station: minus 89.2 degrees Celsius, recorded on July 21, 1983. This figure is recognized by the World Meteorological Organization, and no one has surpassed it in over forty years. Satellites, however, have observed temperatures as low as minus 98 degrees in East Antarctica, according to a 2018 study published in Geophysical Research Letters. These numbers cannot be directly compared, however: satellites measure snow surface temperature, while weather stations measure air temperature at a height of two meters. The authors of the study themselves converted their minus 98 reading to an air equivalent, yielding approximately minus 94 degrees with a four-degree margin of error.

The proximity of Antarctic frost to the summer heatwave in the Northern Hemisphere appears paradoxical only at first glance. As Carugati explains, climate change is a long-term global trend, whereas individual weather events can simultaneously produce exceptional cold in one location and extreme heat in another. One does not contradict the other: a stable anticyclone over the plateau, which dispersed clouds and allowed heat to escape into space, is a local mechanism that coexists perfectly with overall warming.

Especially since Concordia also sets records in both directions. On March 18, 2022, the same station recorded minus 11.5 degrees Celsius—approximately 38 degrees above the seasonal norm. The coldest place on Earth, where the thermometer can surge almost forty degrees upwards, provides data for climate models that is no less valuable than the July minus 84 reading.
