An unusual search operation, which the whole country followed, has concluded in the American state of Texas. A young giraffe named Gracie escaped from a private ranch. Despite being about three meters tall, finding the escapee proved to be quite difficult.
Gracie disappeared on June 12, 2026, from Cedar Hollow Ranch, located in Real County, about 160 kilometers west of San Antonio. It is believed that the giraffe climbed a rocky slope in search of fresh leaves, found herself outside the fence, and continued into the hills.
How Can You Lose a Giraffe?
At first glance, it might seem impossible not to notice such a huge animal with a long neck. However, the hilly terrain of Texas turned out to be an ideal hiding place.
The area is covered with dense bushes, oak trees, canyons, and rocky elevations. Gracie could have stood among the tall trees or hidden under their canopies, remaining invisible even from the air.
Cars, camera traps, and helicopters were used for the search. In the first stage, crews surveyed an area of approximately 7500 acres but could not find the animal. The ranch owners also offered a reward of $5,000 for information that would help safely return the escapee home.
Gracie Became an Internet Star
The story quickly spread across social media. Users posted jokes and fake photos depicting the giraffe supposedly riding a bus, relaxing by a river, shopping, and even working at a fire station.
Some images were so convincing that local authorities had to refute false reports that Gracie had already been found.
Meanwhile, the real giraffe was calmly traveling through the wilderness. She stayed away from people, fed on local vegetation, and found a spot near a stream and a pond.
Found From a Helicopter
On the morning of June 26, almost two weeks after her disappearance, Gracie was finally spotted during an aerial search. She was located about four miles – approximately 6.4 kilometers – south of the ranch.
The giraffe looked healthy and did not resemble an exhausted traveler at all. Sheriff of Real County, Nathan Johnson, humorously described her condition as "fat and happy" and noted that her behavior seemed to say to the rescuers: "Catch me if you can."
It was impossible to grab Gracie immediately. The young giraffe weighed at least 540 kilograms, so the owners needed a veterinarian's help. The plan was to gently sedate the animal, place her in a special tall trailer, and transport her back.
On June 29, Gracie safely returned to Cedar Hollow Ranch. A photo posted by local authorities showed the traveler standing behind the fence of her home ranch once again.
An Escape with a Happy Ending
Over the two weeks, Gracie did not sustain any injuries, did not approach populated areas, and did not pose a threat to people. According to the ranch owner, if the giraffe had encountered a person, she most likely would have just tried to run away.
Now, the ranch intends to install additional fencing in areas previously considered secure. And Gracie herself, after her journey, has become perhaps the most famous giraffe in Texas.
