June 2026 marked a historic milestone for the European Union's energy transition. For the first time in history, solar energy became the largest source of electricity in the bloc for an entire calendar month, forming a new, fundamental ("stratified") layer of the European energy system.
According to fresh data from the independent energy think tank Ember, solar generation accounted for exactly 25% of the EU's total electricity production in June. This figure signifies a qualitative shift: renewable energy sources (RES) have ceased to be a seasonal or marginal addition, transforming into the load-bearing structure of the continent's energy balance.
New Energy Balance Hierarchy
The data for June 2026 clearly demonstrates the shift in priorities within the EU's energy sector. Solar energy not only took first place but also surpassed traditional baseload sources:

It is noteworthy that the share of coal has fallen to a historic low of 8%, indicating an accelerated decommissioning of capacity amid economic non-viability and climate regulations.
This is only the third time in the European Union's history that solar energy has become the absolute leader in monthly generation. Previously, this was achieved twice: in June 2025 and May 2026. However, the consolidation of this result specifically in June, traditionally the sunniest month, confirms the sustainability of the new trend.
"Exceeding All Forecasts"
Experts note that the speed of market transformation has been faster than the most optimistic scenarios.
"The rise of solar energy has been truly rapid, exceeding many forecasts," comments Chris Rosslou, Senior Energy Analyst at Ember. - "In just a few years, solar energy has transformed from a minor player into an integral part of Europe's energy system. This is a direct result of governments and citizens massively seeking affordable and quickly deployable energy sources for domestic consumption."
