In early September 2026, Uber and British startup Wayve brought the UK's first autonomous vehicles available through an app to the streets of London. These are not fully driverless taxis, but for now rides supervised by a licensed driver, yet the step is significant for the European market.
Passengers ordering UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort may be offered a Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with the Wayve AI Driver system. The car drives itself, but behind the wheel sits a trained driver from Transport for London, ready to intervene. The cost remains the same, and the choice is voluntary: the customer can decline before the car arrives. The operating area covers all of London except airports, and the fleet is currently limited to about fifteen cars.
Wayve is a London-based company that has been testing its technology on the complex streets of the British capital since 2018. Unlike many competitors, its AV 2.0 system does not rely on detailed HD maps but learns from real-world experience, like a human. This allows it to adapt more quickly to new cities and conditions, which is especially important for London's narrow, winding, and congested roads.
The Uber and Wayve partnership began in 2024 with investments and already spans 12 markets worldwide. London became the first where the technology reached everyday passengers. Next on the plans are Tokyo and other cities. Regulators currently require a driver to be present, but the companies expect a gradual expansion to fully autonomous operation.
For Londoners, this is an opportunity to try for the first time a ride where the car itself chooses the route and reacts to the surroundings. More than 140 thousand people have already expressed interest in the app. The question is how quickly trust in such technology will spread beyond the capital.
In the long term, the launch paves the way for scaling autonomous rides in Europe, where regulations are stricter than in the US or China. Uber aims to become the largest operator of such services by 2029, and Wayve gains real-world data to refine its system in the most challenging conditions.
This is a reminder that progress in autonomous driving is made step by step, and each new city is another lesson for the entire industry.
