The Swedish company Einride and the German supermarket chain Lidl have put into operation on public roads Germany's first-ever fully autonomous cabless truck. On 15 September 2026, regular deliveries began between a distribution center and a store in Edermünde (the state of Hesse) — without a driver or a safety operator on board. The vehicle, Level Four under the SAE classification, operates under a special permit from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the first document of its kind in Germany.
The electric Einride truck holds 15 Euro pallets and makes up to three trips a day along a strictly defined route. Over the four-month pilot period, more than three thousand pallets of dry goods are planned to be transported. The KBA permit is the result of a scrupulous safety review under real-world conditions, which speaks to the stringent requirements of the German certification system. Germany, as the world's third-largest economy and Europe's largest road freight market, has historically imposed the highest safety standards.
The project is intended to address the acute shortage of truck drivers and to strengthen the reliability of logistics chains. Einride already uses autonomous trucks in Europe — the company deployed its first fully electric T-Pod back in 2019 in Sweden. German approval is considered one of the strictest in the world and gives the company a status that could serve as a model for other European regulators. Lidl plans to expand the route into a full-fledged delivery system with multiple stops and is discussing introducing the technology in other divisions of the Schwarz Group.
The interests of both sides are clear and open: Einride gains prestigious certification in a demanding European market, while Lidl is testing a way to reduce its dependence on the shortage of human resources in logistics. Everything is happening transparently, within the framework of public statements and an official partnership. However, success depends on how consistently the technology performs under real road conditions and changeable weather.
For consumers, this means potentially more reliable supplies of goods to store shelves and a possible reduction in logistics costs in the longer term. The main question is how quickly other countries will follow Germany's example and whether they will be able to integrate autonomous deliveries into everyday logistics without compromising safety. Only time will show the long-term results, but it is already clear: autonomous freight logistics is moving from the testing stage into real commercial operation.
This decision is rewriting the rules of the industry and vividly shows how quickly the face of freight transport is changing — from the experiments of the past into the everyday reality of tomorrow.
