It seems American advertising has reached a completely new level of effectiveness!
Usually advertisers dream of viewers remembering their characters, discussing their commercials, and telling their friends about them.
The insurance company Liberty Mutual managed to achieve all of that and even more.
Its new advertising hero has so annoyed Americans that several dozen people took to the streets with placards, demanding that he be removed from television immediately! 😂
And this is no joke.
On Sunday, 25 October, near the Liberty Mutual headquarters in Boston a genuine protest rally took place against… a yellow fluffy creature named Liberty Biberty.
What's more, some participants came specially from other cities!
Who is Liberty Biberty, and what did he do wrong?
Picture a bright yellow fluffy ball with human eyes, teeth, and a somewhat strange smile.
That is exactly what the new Liberty Mutual advertising character, which appeared on American television in the summer of 2026, looks like.
His name was born from an old advertising joke.
Back in 2019, the company released a commercial in which an actor simply could not pronounce the name Liberty Mutual correctly and kept saying “Liberty Biberty” instead.
Viewers remembered the joke.
A few years later, marketers decided to develop the idea and turned this absurd phrase into a separate character.
Thus was born the yellow fluffball who was supposed to become the public's new favorite.
But something went off plan.
Some viewers were irritated by his appearance. Others by the intrusiveness of the commercials. Still others by the very idea of such an absurd character.
Gradually the internet filled with jokes, parodies, and indignant comments.
And then came the man who decided to move from words to action.
It all began with a 19-year-old blogger
The organizer of the unusual campaign was Connor Harvey, a 19-year-old YouTube blogger from the small town of Wilmot in the state of New Hampshire.
In early October he published a video titled Death of Mascots — “The Death of Advertising Mascots.”
In it the young man criticized modern advertising characters and jokingly proposed holding a real rally against Liberty Biberty.
The first video was watched by tens of thousands of people.
It turned out that Connor was far from alone in his dislike of the yellow creature!
So the blogger published a second video — this time with an official announcement of the upcoming campaign.
And that is when the unexpected happened.
The clip racked up more than 600 thousand views!
What was originally conceived as an internet joke suddenly began turning into a real event.
Connor named the date and meeting place, suggested that viewers bring friends, make placards, and come to the company's headquarters in Boston.
And people really did come!
“Liberty from Biberty!”
On 25 October, several dozen people gathered in front of the Liberty Mutual office.
They brought homemade placards, megaphones, and even specially made hoodies featuring a crossed-out image of the hated character.
Some of the placards bore slogans:
“Liberty from Biberty!” — “Freedom from Biberty!”
There were also images of the yellow creature crossed out with huge red X's.
The participants chanted slogans and demanded an end to the advertising campaign.
Connor himself compared what was happening to the historic Boston Tea Party — the famous event of 1773 that became a symbol of American protest.
True, this time no one was planning to throw tea into the harbor.
People demanded that the fluffy yellow ball be taken off television! 🤣
Passing drivers honked their horns in support.
And the organizer live-streamed the rally on YouTube.
The most surprising thing was that the event attracted people of all ages — from children to middle-aged parents.
One young participant even joked that this was perhaps the most pointless activity for a person with absolutely nothing to do.
But this did not embarrass those gathered in the slightest.
After all, it's not every day you get the chance to express public dissatisfaction with an advertising toy!
But then a defender of the yellow fluffball appeared!
It was at that very moment that the story turned into a real comedy.
While the participants were unanimously demanding that the world be rid of Liberty Biberty, a man by the name of Calvin Holmes.
And he was dressed… as that very same advertising character!
Calvin painted his face yellow and put on a skirt, a fluffy scarf and the signature Liberty Mutual hat.
He had not come to support the protesters, but on the contrary — to defend the poor yellow creature!
According to Calvin, those around him treat the fluffy little thing unfairly purely because of its appearance.
The man declared that someone had to stand up for a character everyone hates.
And he even called it a lovely little weirdo!
Naturally, such a position provoked the protesters' displeasure.
The participants began to boo the defender, and one of his placards was even torn up.
Incidentally, this whole story remained above all an absurd and comedic event.
Picture what was happening from the outside.
Several dozen grown adults are standing in front of the office of a major insurance company, demanding that a yellow doll be removed from the advertisements.
And out to meet them comes a man with a yellow face, trying to prove that the doll has a right to exist!
It seems the writers of comedy shows can safely go on vacation. Real life is already writing far funnier plots for them. 😂
And what did the insurance company say?
By the time of the first publications, Liberty Mutual had not publicly responded to journalists' inquiries about the unusual protest.
And here is where the most interesting part begins.
After all, from a marketing standpoint, what happened is an almost incredible success.
The company wanted to create a recognisable character.
And it got a hero about whom major American media began to write.
It wanted to draw attention to its advertisement.
And it got a genuine rally with placards, live streams and television reports!
It wanted the name Liberty Biberty to be remembered.
Now even those who never intended to buy insurance know it.
Journalists and advertising specialists have already noted this paradox: an irritating character is capable of generating colossal interest precisely because it provokes negative emotions.
However, whether this means growth in insurance sales is not yet known.
But one thing can be said with complete certainty.
The company received so much attention that far from every advertisement manages to buy that much for huge money!
And yet it all could have ended with the ordinary switching of a television!
The funniest thing in this story is the utterly incredible sequence of events.
First, the advertisers came up with a yellow fluffy ball.
Then viewers grew tired of it.
Next, a 19-year-old guy recorded a joke video.
The joke gathered hundreds of thousands of views.
After that, dozens of people made placards, came to the insurance company's office and staged a genuine demonstration.
And finally, there appeared a man who dressed up as the yellow ball to defend its reputation.
That is how an ordinary insurance advertisement turned into an event of national scale!
One can only imagine what will happen next.
Perhaps the company really will remove Liberty Biberty from its advertising.
And perhaps it will release a new video in which the yellow fluffy creature comes to a rally against itself.
And demands compensation for moral damage!
But the main thing is that now Americans need to be careful about their wishes.
Otherwise, today they demand the removal of an irritating advertising character, and tomorrow the insurers will invent a wife for him, three children and a separate TV series.
And then the whole of Boston will have to be gathered for the next rally! 🤣
