In the marshy mountain meadows of western North Carolina, Labradors with noses to the ground and tails held high are meticulously zigzagging across the damp terrain. Their mission is to locate tiny bog turtles, North America's smallest species, which are so small they can fit in the palm of a hand.
In the summer of 2026, three conservation organizations launched a pilot project utilizing these dogs to accomplish what biologists have struggled with for years: finding these rare reptiles and their nests.
Bog turtles have long faced severe threats. Their populations are declining due to poaching for the illegal pet trade and habitat destruction caused by development encroaching on their mountain wetland homes.
Hurricane Helen in 2024 further devastated these already scarce areas, burying them under tons of gravel and sediment, which significantly reduced their limited ranges. With turtles laying only two to four eggs annually and not reaching maturity until around seven years old, every single nest is critically important for their survival.
Previously, biologists would search for turtles by probing the mud with a wooden stick, listening for a distinctive tap. This was a hazardous task; one researcher's hand once encountered the head of an alligator snapping turtle.
Now, Labradors Pete and Letty are being trained to specifically detect the scent of adult turtles. Any reptiles found are fitted with miniature radio transmitters, allowing researchers to track their movements and ultimately pinpoint nesting locations.
Locating nests, however, requires a different kind of expert. Stevie, an Australian Shepherd and cattle dog mix weighing just 16 kilograms, works slowly and meticulously.
She was chosen specifically for her low excitability, as a dog that moves too quickly might easily miss a faint scent. Before heading into the field, Stevie was 'imprinted' on egg samples from a zoo, and later on actual nests collected using gauze pads and specialized tubes.
The dogs have already demonstrated their effectiveness. During their very first season, they successfully helped locate adult turtles for tagging.
Looking ahead, their keen sense of smell is planned for surveying new areas for potential protection, especially in places where human observation might miss crucial indicators. Simultaneously, eggs from the most vulnerable nests are sent to the Knoxville Zoo for a 'head-starting program,' which sees hatchlings emerge three times larger and with tougher shells after a year.
This project highlights how a refined natural tool—a dog's sense of smell—significantly enhances human efforts to restore fragile ecosystems. While the dogs return to New York for further training, biologists continue their vital work on the ground.
Ultimately, the dogs' noses are not only helping to find turtles but also providing invaluable insights into which wetlands can still be preserved before they vanish forever.
