Wildlife Management in the Amazon: Benefiting Both People and Forests

In the vast expanses of the Amazon, traditional wildlife management practices, shaped by indigenous peoples, demonstrate an unexpected interconnectedness: they not only ensure food security for communities but also contribute to the conservation of the forest itself.

A recent study, published in the journal Nature, analyzed data from nearly 450,000 harvested animals from 625 rural locations across the Amazon. The analysis indicates that approximately 0.57 million tons of biomass are extracted annually, a significant portion of which is used for local consumption. Furthermore, cultural hunting norms—such as seasonal restrictions, bans on certain species, and spatial zoning—act as natural regulators, preventing population depletion.

Healthy, productive forests support a greater diversity and abundance of animals, which directly impacts the availability of protein, iron, and vitamins for rural communities. In areas with significant deforestation, hunting productivity drops by up to 67 percent, and per capita meat availability declines near urban centers and in deforested zones. Thus, preserving forest cover becomes a condition not only for biodiversity but also for the sustainable nutrition of millions of people.

Local initiatives play a key role: when hunting rules are developed by the communities themselves, taking into account their traditions and ecology, they prove to be more viable and effective. This is not simply a matter of prohibition but an entire system where cultural taboos and practical knowledge work together to maintain a balance between human needs and nature's capacity.

The study's findings emphasize that forest degradation threatens not only rare species but also traditional food systems upon which indigenous and rural populations depend. Management based on local experience helps mitigate these risks, preserving both the forest and livelihoods.

Ultimately, when local communities determine the rules for interacting with wildlife, everyone benefits—both people and the Amazonian ecosystem.
