In the savannas of southern Africa, where daytime heat gives way to cool nights, the black-eyed bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor) faces a complex challenge: protect its eggs and chicks from overheating without exhausting itself. New research published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution reveals that nest site selection and parental behavior are closely linked to how the temperature inside the nest deviates from the surrounding environment.

Scientists from Wageningen University and the University of Eswatini tracked the birds in their natural habitat. It turned out that no nest buffers temperature fluctuations. On the contrary, all of them, to varying degrees, amplify these fluctuations: during hot hours, it becomes even hotter inside, and during cool hours, cooler than outside. This 'amplified' variability forces parents to pant more frequently, a sign of heat stress.

The most interesting behavior occurs at high temperatures. If the nest temperature closely mirrors the external temperature, the birds remain on the nest longer. However, when the nest heats up significantly beyond the norm, parents leave it more often. Apparently, they are trying to reduce their own energy expenditure, but in doing so, they risk leaving the eggs or chicks unprotected. The study does not provide a definitive answer as to which factors – thermal or other – determine this choice.
The findings underscore how finely balanced the parental care system is in these passerine birds. Even a slight change in the nest's microclimate can affect breeding success. In the context of a changing climate, where extreme temperatures are becoming more frequent, such mechanisms are of particular importance for the survival of the species.
Thus, the choice of nest site proves to be not just a matter of convenience, but a key factor on which both the well-being of the parents and the future of the offspring depend.
