Three New Fauna Records for the Department of Huila in Colombia

In the department of Huila in southern Colombia, where Andean forests gradually give way to Amazonian expanses, local residents and scientists have recorded three species previously unlisted in regional catalogs. These findings are not merely additions to a list, but evidence of how closely intertwined ecosystems are and how crucial the daily work of those living alongside nature is.

The species in question are the Southern Red Brocket deer (Mazama zetta), the Long-tailed Porcupine (Coendou longicaudatus), and the Greater Grison (Galictis vittata). Each was confirmed using camera traps and regular patrols conducted by community monitoring groups in collaboration with the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Alto Magdalena (CAM).

Mazama zetta is particularly noteworthy. Until recently, this deer was considered part of a broader group, but a recent taxonomic revision has distinguished it as a separate species. The first confirmed sighting in Huila occurred in the area influenced by the Páramo de Las Oseas Regional Natural Park—a key territory connecting Andean forests with the Andean-Amazonian corridor.

The second species, Coendou longicaudatus, also gained separate status thanks to a reclassification review. The "Hábitat Sostenible" group from Algeciras set up camera traps and obtained the first images in the department. Such records help clarify the species' actual range among other Neotropical porcupines.

The third, Galictis vittata, a large grison. Its presence was documented by the "Guardianes de la Biodiversidad Campoalegruna" and "Hábitat Sostenible" groups near the La Siberia-Ceibas park. The animal rarely appears on camera, making each confirmation valuable for understanding its distribution.

All three findings were made within the Andean-Amazonian corridor—a natural "bridge" that allows animals to move between different altitudinal zones and ecosystems. Preserving this connectivity allows populations to exchange genes and better withstand landscape changes.

Local monitoring groups played a key role. Their knowledge of the territory and regular patrols complemented the efforts of CAM specialists. As biologist Katherine Arenas noted, such collaborative projects yield high-quality data and help in making informed conservation decisions.

The new records show that even in relatively well-studied regions, much the unexpected remains hidden if monitoring is continuous and involves those who daily observe tracks and signs of life.

Supporting corridors like the Andean-Amazonian and involving communities in observations remain the most reliable ways to preserve what has not yet been described.
