In the very center of Hermosillo, amidst the urbanized slopes of Cerro Altares, scientists discovered something that had gone unnoticed for decades: a tiny spider only 2.2 millimeters long. The new species for science, Filistatinella bacanora, described in the journal Acta Zoológica Mexicana, is the result of the work of researchers from the University of Sonora (UES) led by David Chamé Vásquez.
The species' name pays tribute to a local tradition – bacanora, a strong spirit that was secretly produced in caves and ravines in the last century. The spider, which lives under rocks, seems to have shared the drink's fate: both hid in the same landscape until they came to light. Co-authors include Karime Gómez Moreno and María Luisa Jiménez, the first Mexican arachnologist.
Cerro Altares is an area of intense urban pressure, where concrete and roads encroach on natural spaces. Nevertheless, it is here that a previously unknown life form has survived. This serves as a reminder that even landscapes heavily altered by humans can harbor biological riches that we simply haven't had time to notice.
According to Chamé Vásquez, there are still many such "secrets" in Sonora, the second-largest state in the country. The team is already conducting research in the southern part of the region with UES ecologists, and further discoveries are expected in the coming months. Such findings show how incomplete our understanding of fauna remains, even in seemingly well-studied areas.
The spider's small size highlights a paradox: the most inconspicuous inhabitants often turn out to be the most important for understanding an ecosystem. They participate in food chains, regulate insect populations, and serve as indicators of soil and microclimate conditions. Their disappearance might go unnoticed until it's too late.
The discovery of Filistatinella bacanora is not just a scientific fact, but an invitation to look more closely at our own city surroundings and appreciate how nature continues to surprise us even where everything seems to be already known.
