A series of innovative experiments has been launched in France to introduce conversational robots and artificial-intelligence-based voice systems in hospitals and nursing homes. The main goal of these initiatives is to support people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The new technologies are intended to become an additional tool in non-drug therapy, but experts emphasise that they should not and cannot replace human involvement.

The practice at the Broca Hospital in Paris

At the Broca Hospital in Paris (Hôpital Broca), elderly patients are already taking part in experiments with several types of robotic assistants.

One of them is a humanoid robot, NAO, which, through questions and special exercises, encourages patients to talk and stimulates their cognitive functions.

Another device, a robotic seal, Paro, was created specifically to provide therapeutic comfort (pet therapy). It is equipped with sensors that allow it to respond to the patient's movements and sounds, imitating a living being and reducing anxiety levels. The hospital is also testing a robot, Miroki, whose main task is to maintain a natural conversation with patients.

Personalised AI in the south of France

An equally interesting experiment is taking place in the south of France, in a nursing home, La Septfontoise (the Tarn-et-Garonne department). Here the staff are testing a voice AI system, Livana, developed to support residents in moments of anxiety or psychomotor agitation.

The technology works through a telephone device and makes it possible to build personalised conversations. Before the experiment began, the staff, with the consent and active participation of the families, collected detailed biographical data about the residents: their interests, professional paths and important life events. This information is used to configure the timbre of the voice and the content of the system's dialogues.

"Elements can be embedded in the voice that help calm a person, drawing on their interests and the story of their life", explains the psychologist Élodie Jammes.

Staff support and a non-drug approach

According to the director of the facility, La Septfontoise Ghislaine Vérin, this technology could become a valuable form of support both for the residents and for the medical staff. "The aim of the trials is to study non-drug approaches that can improve the well-being of residents while at the same time providing additional support to care staff", she notes. This is especially relevant given the chronic shortage of staff in the field of care for the elderly and the growing burden on medical personnel.

Ethical boundaries and the role of the human being

Despite the optimistic results, experts caution against excessive technologisation of care. Specialists emphasise that the role of robotics must remain clearly defined.

"I do not believe that robots should be perceived as a means of replacement", the researchers note. However perfect the conversational abilities of machines or the sense of their presence may become, they remain merely tools. Technology is incapable of giving what is a fundamental human need: "They will never replace the vital human relationships that people need".

Conclusion

The introduction of conversational robots and voice AI in French medical and social care institutions demonstrates great potential for improving the quality of life of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. However, the success of these initiatives depends on a skilful balance: technology must complement and enhance human care, not replace it. The results of the current experiments could form the basis of new standards of care for the elderly not only in France, but throughout the world.
