MIT Neuroscientists: Brain Can Reason Without Words

Neuroscientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have presented compelling evidence suggesting that logical thought and language rely on distinct systems within the brain.

A study published in the journal PNAS revealed that even individuals with severe speech impairments following a stroke could successfully complete complex logical tasks. During these tasks, the brain regions primarily responsible for language processing remained largely inactive.

Evelina Fedorenko, an associate professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, led this research. Postdoctoral researcher Hope Kean, from Fedorenko's lab, played a crucial role in the study.

The scientists examined two patients diagnosed with aphasia, a severe disorder affecting both speech comprehension and production. Despite their condition, these patients performed no worse than the control group when solving logical puzzles involving numbers and visual patterns. The participants communicated the rules they discovered through gestures or drawings.

For experiments involving neurotypical volunteers, MRI technology was utilized. During the resolution of logical problems, the brain's language areas showed no activation, regardless of whether the reasoning was inductive or deductive.

This discovery challenges long-held philosophical and scientific beliefs regarding the inseparable connection between language and thought. The researchers suggest that abstract thinking might demand a level of precision beyond what typical speech can offer.

The findings hold practical implications for working with individuals suffering from aphasia. They confirm that losing the ability to speak does not equate to losing the capacity for logical thought.

These insights may also prove valuable in the development of artificial intelligence, particularly as current language models mimic reasoning in ways that differ from the human brain.
