Sugar in space

Sugar has been found in space for the first time – and this is not a beautiful metaphor, but the result of a real scientific observation. An international group of astronomers has discovered erythrose, a sugar found in raspberries on Earth, in an interstellar cloud of gas and dust – thereby, for the first time, detecting real sugar outside the Solar System.

The discovery was made in the molecular cloud G+0.693−0.027, located about 27,000 light-years from Earth, near the center of the Milky Way. Scientists used radio telescopes in Spain and compared spectral signals with laboratory data to confirm that it was indeed erythrose.

Why is this discovery so important? Because sugars are not just a source of sweet taste, but molecules linked to fundamental biochemical processes, including the formation of DNA and RNA. If such substances can form in cold interstellar clouds, it means that space itself produces some of the "ingredients" from which the foundations of life can later be built.

According to researchers, erythrose could have arisen on the surface of interstellar dust and ice from simpler organic compounds. This makes the scenario of the cosmic origin of organic matter even more convincing: substances that build biology could have existed long before the appearance of Earth, and then arrived on it along with comets and asteroids.

Thus, the Universe unexpectedly appeared not only as a cold and empty space, but also as a giant chemical laboratory. And if it truly had its own "dessert," it seems it was being prepared long before life itself appeared.
