In one of the most unexplored corners of the planet — the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the central Pacific Ocean — researchers have discovered more than 39 potentially new species of deep-sea creatures. An expedition by the Natural History Museum in London, using a remotely operated vehicle, brought up from depths exceeding 4000 meters 55 specimens, among which 48 turned out to be different species, and only nine of them were previously known to science.
This vast area, stretching between Hawaii and Mexico, attracts attention not only from biologists but also from companies planning to mine polymetallic nodules. It was precisely to assess biological diversity before possible industrial exploitation that the study was conducted. Among the finds are "rubber bunnies" (sea cucumbers), brittle stars, spiny sea urchins, and other abyssal inhabitants, many of which had previously only been seen in photographs from the seafloor.
Lead author Guadalupe Bribiesca-Contreras noted that she did not expect such a wealth of life forms. "I definitely did not expect to find so many animals," she said. According to her, many species have yet to be fully described, and without physical specimens and DNA data, accurate identification remains a challenge.
The Clarion-Clipperton Zone remains one of the least explored on Earth. The deep-sea plains and seamounts here harbor ecosystems where life exists in total darkness, low temperatures, and minimal nutrient input. The discoveries highlight how little we know about the mechanisms that sustain biodiversity in such extreme conditions.
Each new species is not just a scientific sensation but a reminder of the fragility of connections in the ocean. Sea cucumbers and other invertebrates play an important role in processing organic matter on the seafloor, influencing the carbon cycle and the stability of the entire ecosystem. Their disappearance or habitat disturbance could have far-reaching consequences that are difficult to predict in advance.
Such findings show that even in the era of satellites and underwater robots, nature continues to surprise, and the study of deep-sea communities must continue before large-scale mineral extraction projects begin.
