In the famous La Brea tar pits, where bones of mammoths and saber-toothed cats have been found for decades, paleontologists unexpectedly stumbled upon traces of a very different inhabitant — a tiny toad that lived about 45 thousand years ago. The remains, extracted back in 1929, were stored in museum collections for decades until researcher H. Alberto Cruz reexamined them. It turned out to be not just a familiar spadefoot toad, but a completely new species, named Spea labreae.
The discovery became only the second case of describing an extinct Ice Age amphibian in North America. The bones, particularly a fragment of the sacro-urostyle region, had distinctive features that did not match either modern species or known fossils. Apparently, the toad fell into the sticky tar and was preserved thanks to the unique conditions of the pits. Such finds are rare: amphibians have fragile skeletons and rarely enter the fossil record.
The significance of the discovery goes far beyond simple taxonomy. Amphibians are extremely sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity — they are like living indicators of the environment. The presence of Spea labreae along with remains of the Mexican burrowing toad (Rhinophrynus dorsalis), whose closest modern populations are 2500 kilometers to the south, indicates a wetter and possibly cooler climate in the area of present-day Los Angeles at the end of the last Ice Age. These data help refine the picture of ancient ecosystems, where large mammals often overshadow the role of small animals.
Researchers note that such microfaunal finds allow a better understanding of how climatic shifts affected species distribution in the past. Today, when climate change is happening rapidly, the lessons of the Ice Age are especially valuable: they show which species could disappear or shift their ranges with warming. The La Brea archives, it turns out, still hold many surprises even after a century of excavations.
Unlike the high-profile finds of megafauna, this toad reminds us how important the "invisible" links of ecosystems are. Its extinction and the range shifts of other amphibians paint a picture of gradual landscape transformation from wetter conditions to modern arid ones. Such details help build more accurate models of past and future changes.
The discovery of Spea labreae once again confirms: even in well-studied places, science can deliver unexpected lessons about the fragility of natural systems.
