Joey Chestnut wins 18th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

The United States celebrated its 250th anniversary of independence in the most quintessential American fashion—with flags, boisterous crowds, sweltering heat, and dozens of rapidly disappearing hot dogs.

At the legendary Nathan’s Famous contest, held every July 4th at Coney Island in New York, Joey Chestnut once again proved why he is the ultimate icon of competitive eating. In just ten minutes, he downed 66 hot dogs and buns to claim yet another championship belt.

For the 42-year-old Chestnut, this victory was his 18th win in 21 appearances at the prestigious event. While his competitors tried to keep it close early on, the champion soon pulled away, turning the contest into a solo performance. He maintained a blistering pace, consuming roughly one hot dog every nine seconds.

The heat bested the record, but it couldn't best Chestnut.

The competition was held under grueling weather conditions. With temperatures climbing toward 33 degrees Celsius and high humidity making the buns unusually sticky, participants struggled to maintain their top speeds.

Chestnut later admitted that the oppressive heat had taken a toll on his performance. Consequently, he fell short of his own world record of 76 hot dogs in ten minutes, which he established back in 2021. However, his tally of 66 was more than enough to ensure a comfortable victory.

As per tradition, contestants soaked their buns in water and broke the hot dogs into pieces to save every possible second. The rules strictly prohibit the use of any utensils or condiments during the match.

The most American of spectacles.

In 2026, the competition carried extra weight as the United States celebrated its semiquincentennial. Thousands of fans dressed in costumes, hats, and flags—or T-shirts featuring hot dogs—swarmed the Nathan’s Famous stage.

Chestnut described the event as one of the most patriotic sports in existence. It’s hard to disagree: the mustard-colored championship belt, announcers roaring into microphones, a frenzied crowd, and mountains of sausages have long since turned a simple eating contest into an iconic American tradition.

In the women's bracket, Miki Sudo was once again the victor. She consumed 38¾ hot dogs to secure her 12th championship title.

The king remains on his throne.

For the average person, 66 hot dogs represent a multi-week food supply. For Joey Chestnut, it’s just another day at work and another belt for the collection.

The world record didn't fall, but the audience got exactly what they came for: the heat, the chewing, the drama, and the circus. The classic Nathan’s Famous remains nonsensical, loud, and uniquely magnificent.
