A diver descends into warm coastal waters and observes that the familiar school of reef fish has dwindled, while unusual spots have appeared on the corals. Such observations are made worldwide, yet until recently, they were often lost among photo archives and personal memories.
DIVR is changing this scenario by enabling divers to record their dives in under half a minute, share photos with friends, and log encountered species. Behind the scenes, each observation is verified against the World Register of Marine Species and converted into the Darwin Core international standard, used by scientists.
The platform has already been vetted by EMODnet Biology specialists from VLIZ, and its data is slated for publication in open databases like EMODnet, OBIS, and GBIF. The application also partners with Coral.org and, from its inception, covers over 4,500 marine species and 5,600 dive sites globally. Project founder Joop Veerman, a diving instructor, personally developed both the application, the web platform, and the entire research pipeline.
Recreational divers undertake millions of dives annually, gaining a broader view of the ocean than any research expedition could provide. Previously, this wealth of information remained untapped, despite enthusiasts often being the first to notice changes, from shifts in species composition to the emergence of new threats. Now, every such observation can transform into a data point, aiding in the real-time monitoring of ecosystem health.
Just as birdwatchers have contributed to ornithological databases for decades, divers now have a tool that transforms their hobby into a systematic contribution. The data is structured for comparison with professional research, and WoRMS validation minimizes the risk of errors. While this doesn't replace laboratory work, it significantly expands the geographical scope and frequency of observations in areas scientists cannot physically access.
This approach is particularly valuable for the ocean, where changes often occur faster than traditional methods can record them. It demonstrates how personal dive experiences can collectively form a comprehensive picture, aiding in the understanding and protection of marine ecosystems.
