Where Darkness Blooms: A Pink Firework in the Deep Ocean

Sunlight does not penetrate here. The water presses with immense force, the temperature is near freezing, and the familiar contours of the world dissolve into darkness.

But it is here, almost two kilometers beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, that life blooms.

The beam of a submersible slowly glides over the seafloor—and out of the darkness emerges a marvel of living architecture: a tall golden spiral, as if twisting around an invisible axis and unfurling thin, flexible branches in all directions. It looks as though someone had frozen a burst of celebratory fire in time.

Researchers call it firework coral —the "firework coral."

A little deeper, another encounter awaits: a coral the color of pink bubblegum, on whose branches rests a brittle star—a relative of sea stars, almost indistinguishable from its living home.

At this depth, colors are hidden from the human eye—but life continues to create its masterpieces.

Expedition into the Deep-Sea Desert

On September 4, 2026, the Ocean Exploration Trust released footage captured during the expedition NA181 — Exploration of Wake Island’s Deep Sea.

The research vessel E/V Nautilus is exploring the vicinity of Wake Atoll—one of the most isolated landmasses on Earth, located roughly halfway between the Hawaiian and Mariana Islands.

Around the atoll stretches about 407 thousand square kilometers of seafloor. The vast majority of this area remains unmapped in detail and virtually unexplored.

During a dive on the McDonnell Seamount, west of the atoll, the vehicles Hercules and Atalanta discovered two remarkable deep-sea corals.

The first was found at a depth of 1806 meters. It is Iridogorgia magnispiralis , a soft coral of the family Chrysogorgiidae, whose colony forms an almost perfect spiral and can rise several meters above the seafloor.

Members of this species are capable of bioluminescence—the production of their own light through a chemical reaction. However, in the published footage, the coral's glow is not recorded, so what we see is not a "glowing spiral" but its natural coloration revealed in the vehicle's lights.

From a distance, the coral resembles at once a tree, a galaxy, and a burst of festive fire forever frozen in the darkness.

But its unusual form is not merely an ornament of the ocean.

A Living Multi-Story House

The tall and flexible structure of Iridogorgia creates a multi-level space above the seafloor. Its branches become a refuge and a foothold for other deep-sea organisms.

In a world where suitable hard surfaces are rare, such a coral turns into a true oasis of life. Small animals can attach to its branches, hide among them, or use the colony's height to get closer to particles of organic matter carried by the current.

Thus, before us is not just a beautiful creature, but a living architectural work—an entire habitat that has grown where humanity still has much to learn.

Science reveals the mechanisms by which such forms have developed over millions of years. But the very harmony of this composition leaves room for another perspective: the heart may see in it a touch of Divine design.

A Pink Alliance

At Depth 1894 meters researchers saw another coral — a representative of the genus Hemicorallium, which belongs to the precious corals. Its delicate pink coloration resembled the color of chewing gum.

On its branches sat a large brittle star — an animal from the class Ophiuroidea. Wrapping its long flexible arms around the coral, it rose above the seafloor and gained a convenient position to capture food particles carried by the current.

Such close associations between brittle stars and deep-sea corals are well known. Some may be mutually beneficial, but the nature of the relationship between this particular pair has not yet been studied by scientists. Therefore, it is more accurate to speak not of proven symbiosis, but of a remarkable ecological association.

One organism becomes a support for another, and together they create a small world in the midst of a vast dark space.

An Observation, Not a Discovery of a New Species

It is important to clarify: the published video does not report the discovery of new species and is not a separate peer-reviewed study.

This is a fresh documentary record of observations made during a scientific expedition. Its significance lies in the direct testimony of life in a region, much of which still remains virtually unknown to science.

The expedition runs from 20 August to 18 September 2026 and is scheduled for 30 calendar days. It aims to collect baseline information on biodiversity, geology, abyssal plains, and unexplored seamounts. A separate task is documenting underwater cultural heritage sites related to the history of World War II.

The research is conducted with the support of the NOAA Ocean Exploration program — a division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Each such dive adds a few more points of knowledge to the map of the depths. It allows us to see not only individual animals, but also the subtle connections through which the deep-sea ecosystem exists.

What did the ocean remind us of?

That beauty needs no audience and requires no approval from us.

At a depth of nearly two kilometers, where sunlight never penetrates, pink corals bloom, golden spirals rise above the seafloor, and remarkable alliances of living beings emerge.

The ocean reminded us: even in total darkness, life continues to create its masterpieces.

And if we are willing to see, beauty reveals itself to us even where we least expected to encounter it.
