Two Pink Hunters on the Edge of Darkness

Two “Terrifying” Anglerfish in the Deep-Sea | Nautilus Live

They look almost like toys: with a round pink body, small eyes, and a downturned mouth that gives these fish an expression of perpetual discontent.

But what we see before us are not characters from an underwater fairy tale. These are Chaunacops—a genus of deep-sea anglerfish belonging to the family Chaunacidae.

Their bodies are adapted to a world where food is scarce and every unnecessary movement consumes precious energy.

On August 12, 2026, the Ocean Exploration Trust published a video showing two separate encounters with these unusual fish in the waters of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Two Encounters in Chuuk State

Both fish were discovered by the remotely operated vehicles Little Hercules and Atalanta, which were operating from the research vessel Nautilus.

The first specimen was encountered on the slope of an unnamed seamount at a depth of 1125 meters, approximately 79 kilometers southwest of Lamotrek Island.

The second was observed on another unnamed seamount—roughly halfway between Ifalik and Chuuk islands, at a depth of 2706 meters.

Hundreds of kilometers of ocean and more than a kilometer and a half of depth separated the two locations.

While these observations do not allow for definitive conclusions about the distribution of Chaunacops, they do add new documented encounters with members of the genus in their natural habitat.

Each such frame becomes another detail on the gradually emerging map of deep-sea life.

Why Do They Look 'Grumpy'?

Chaunacops are easily recognizable by their rounded body, pink or reddish coloration, and downturned mouth, which creates their characteristic "grumpy" expression.

Yet, this unusual appearance is not a whim of nature but rather the result of deep specialization.

These fish do not require the streamlined body of a swift swimmer.

They spend most of their time directly on the seafloor, barely moving as they wait for potential prey to approach.

In environments where food is scarce, the ability to conserve energy becomes one of the most crucial conditions for survival.

The Lure in the Center of the Forehead

Like other anglerfish, Chaunacops possesses a modified dorsal fin ray—a distinctive "fishing rod" with a lure at its tip.

For these fish, the lure resembles a cluster of small, bright spots in the center of their forehead.

It is a soft structure that the animal can retract into a special cavity between its eyes.

Exactly how this lure attracts prey has not been definitively established. There is currently no evidence of its bioluminescence.

Researchers are considering other possible mechanisms, including the movement of the lure in the water and chemical signals known from related bottom-dwelling anglerfish.

The new footage does not show the actual moment of hunting.

It reveals something else: the fish adopts a stable position on the seafloor and can wait for extended periods, conserving energy efficiently.

Fins That Become Support

The modified pelvic fins are particularly noticeable in the video.

Chaunacops uses them to prop its body above the sediment, maintaining a stable position on the seafloor.

The fish appears to anchor itself at a specific point in space.

It doesn't completely blend with the substrate but becomes an integral part of the underwater landscape—quiet, motionless, and receptive to its surroundings.

These frames do not allow us to conclude that the animal is walking on its fins or preparing to attack.

However, it is clearly visible how precisely its body is adapted for waiting.

The Deep Speaks to Us

We direct cameras into the deep to observe unknown creatures.

But at the moment of encounter, something more profound occurs: the Ocean reveals another way of being alive.

Magnapinna reveals itself to space and perceives the world through the touch of water.

Chaunacops finds its anchor point, becomes part of the seafloor, and allows the surrounding life to approach.

They do not separate themselves from their environment. They neither resist it nor try to subdue it.

Their bodies and modes of existence are born in profound harmony with the space of which they are a part.

And here, our perspective shifts.

We are no longer merely observers looking at the Ocean from the outside.

We are another form of the same Life that, in the depths, became fish, squid, currents, light, and silence.

The Ocean helps us remember:

strength can be sensitivity;
movement can occur within stillness;
waiting can be a full presence;
and the boundaries between us and the world are thinner than we are accustomed to feeling.

Every new creature not only expands the map of oceanic life.

It also opens up another possibility in human consciousness for perceiving reality.

The Ocean doesn't merely show us who lives in its depths.
Through every encounter, it reminds us of what else Life is—
and what states it is ready to recall through us.
