AirTags, Moto Tags, and SmartTag2 Review: How These Trackers Help Locate Lost Items

A comparison test of Bluetooth trackers, specifically the Apple AirTag, Motorola Moto Tag, and Samsung SmartTag2, evaluated these three devices, which are all priced between 39 and 40 euros. Each tracker operates on a CR2032 battery, requiring annual replacement, and supports precise localization through Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology.

The AirTag connects to Apple's Find My network, the Moto Tag utilizes Google's Find My Device network, while the SmartTag2 integrates with Samsung SmartThings Find. The size of these respective networks significantly influences search speed: Apple reports hundreds of millions of devices, Samsung claims over 300 million, but Google has not released precise figures.

During close-range testing, such as locating a key behind a sofa, all three trackers demonstrated comparable accuracy due to their UWB capabilities. In an urban environment like Hamburg, the AirTag located items faster than its competitors, attributed to the higher density of iPhones. The differences became even more pronounced in a remote area, specifically a field in Schleswig-Holstein, where the AirTag once again took the lead, the SmartTag2 performed reliably when Samsung devices were nearby, and the Moto Tag required considerably more time.

The SmartTag2 distinguishes itself with additional features, including IP67 water resistance and the option for strap attachment. The Moto Tag, while offering a similar design and price point, relies on the Android network for its functionality. Conversely, the AirTag remains the most versatile option for Apple users, though it does not provide precise navigation capabilities with Android devices.

It is important to note that none of these trackers possess their own GPS functionality; instead, they all depend on other smartphones within their respective networks. In sparsely populated or remote areas, locating an item can therefore take several hours or may not be successful at all. Furthermore, manufacturers do not disclose the precise number of active devices within their networks in real time.

Ultimately, the AirTag demonstrated superior results in terms of speed and reliability across most testing scenarios. The SmartTag2 is a suitable choice for Samsung Galaxy owners, while the Moto Tag caters to other Android users. The optimal selection, therefore, largely depends on the owner's existing smartphone ecosystem.
