China Creates Robots Almost Indistinguishable from Humans: WAIC 2026 Exhibition Highlights

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC 2026) recently held in Shanghai, Chinese developers showcased components that will form the basis for complete androids in the future.

Today, the industry has effectively 'disassembled humans into parts': some companies produce hyper-realistic skin, others focus on complex facial servo drives, while still others specialize in mechanical bodies and control systems.

However, the pursuit of photorealism sometimes leads to curious situations. A Chinese company recently had to publicly remove the silicone casing from its humanoid robot during a live broadcast.

Audience members insisted there was a living person hidden inside, prompting engineers to open the robot's body to reveal its metallic framework and servo mechanisms.

Yet, absolute realism has its limits. When a mechanical figure blinks or shifts its gaze, it often triggers instinctive discomfort in people—a phenomenon known as the 'uncanny valley effect' in robotics.

Neurobiologists explain this reaction through evolutionary mechanisms: the human brain is finely tuned to perceive subtle facial micro-expressions. It can distinguish an android from a living person in fractions of a second, even before we consciously register it, by instantly noting the slightest inaccuracies in facial muscle movements, an unnatural blinking rhythm, or delayed responses.

In parallel with advancements in external shells, control systems are also undergoing significant improvements. The exhibition featured bionic prosthetics and platforms that operate exclusively through thought, entirely without wires or joysticks.

Operators utilize non-invasive neurointerfaces, such as those developed by BrainCo. These sensors read electrical impulses from the cerebral cortex and muscle signals, transmitting them to the machine, allowing the robot to synchronously and instantaneously replicate movements that a human has merely conceived.

While some engineers prioritize mechanics, Japanese developers are focusing on empathy and psychological connection. Renowned Japanese inventor Hiroshi Ishiguro, creator of the Geminoid robot series, has developed algorithms that enable androids to smile in sync with humans.

The machine uses cameras to analyze a conversational partner's facial expressions and instantly mirrors them; this emotion synchronization technology aims to make interactions with machines more natural and comfortable.

China currently controls approximately 85% of the global humanoid market, a dominance that has already elicited its first international response. Shortly after the WAIC 2026 exhibition concluded, the United States imposed a ban on importing Chinese humanoids and robot dogs, citing risks of remote access to sensors and surveillance systems.

Concurrently, new regulations for AI companions came into effect within China itself. These new standards mandate that systems must recognize a user's emotional distress, require explicit consent for copying others' faces and voices, and automatically remind users that they are interacting with a machine if a continuous dialogue extends beyond two hours.
