A Strange Trace in the Starship Broadcast: What Flashed Past the Rocket on Its Way to Orbit

On September 28, 2026, Starship Flight 14 lifted off from the Starbase site in Texas — the first flight in which SpaceX's giant rocket actually reached low Earth orbit. In the morning, at around 7:48 local time, Super Heavy and the ship rose into the sky. Cameras broadcast everything live: stage separation, engine operation, the departure into space. The mission achieved its goal — Starship deployed 26 next-generation Starlink V3 satellites and confirmed communication with each of them. But within the first minutes after liftoff, the attention of thousands of viewers shifted to something else.

About seven minutes and fifty-five seconds after liftoff, a narrow, slightly curved streak of pale blue light with a brighter white tip appeared in the frame. It held near the edge of Earth's disk, below and slightly off to the side of the rocket. The object did not vanish at once — it remained visible as the viewing angle changed. Screenshots and short clips instantly flooded the internet. Someone wrote that it looked like a "mothership," and one "bigger than a city." Others simply noted: "It seems we just saw a UFO on live broadcast."

Later, enthusiasts examined the recording in more detail. One account assembled three separate moments. The first — that very bluish-white streak at the horizon of Earth. The second, at about the twelfth minute: several small bright points pass beneath the ship and beside it; a brief exclamation from the commentator can even be heard on the broadcast. The third, at around the fiftieth minute: a bright elongated object crosses the frame diagonally against the backdrop of the planet. Its movement is more noticeable because the other luminous points remain relatively motionless. The shape could be real or the result of motion blur — the distance to the camera is unknown, which means neither size nor speed can be reliably estimated.

SpaceX and Elon Musk did not publicly respond to these frames. Official summaries focused on the main points: the first orbit, the successful deployment of the payload, the controlled return. Because of the premature shutdown of one engine, the flight was cut short, and the ship made a soft, though not ideal, splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. But the mysterious trace remained in the recording.

Some observers immediately offered earthly explanations. One engineer suggested that it was residual gas from the Super Heavy engines after separation and the burn for return: the cloud was first hidden behind the horizon and then "floated up." Someone saw in the streak merely a satellite or a reflection. Others noted that such light effects often appear in the rarefied atmosphere when rocket engines are firing. Nevertheless, some viewers continued to insist: the object looks too cohesive and steady to be only exhaust.

There is still no independent confirmation of what it was. The ship's camera recorded the scene from a single point, without a stereo pair and without precise distance data. That is precisely why the frames leave room for different readings. The history of spaceflight is full of such moments, when technology opens a window, and what flashes in it does not immediately yield an unambiguous interpretation. That day Starship proved that it is capable of reaching orbit and operating there. And the narrow blue streak against the backdrop of Earth added to that achievement one more question to which there is as yet no full answer.
