In the summer of 1969, in the quiet Tallinn suburb of Merivälja, at 34 Hõbekuuse tee, Virgo Mitt was digging a well. At a depth of about six and a half meters, his tool hit a dense, unusually hard layer—smooth on top, rougher on the bottom. A jackhammer struggled to make an impression on it. The fragments were collected in a bucket. Mitt kept one piece.
These fragments eventually ended up in laboratories. Soviet specialists recorded strange properties of the material: electrical discharges upon contact, an unusual composition, and signs of cooling under conditions that excluded the influence of Earth's gravity. Samples were sent to several laboratories across the Union. Conclusions emerged that such an alloy was difficult or impossible to produce using known terrestrial technologies. Theories about an extraterrestrial origin ceased to be mere rumors.
In the early 1980s, serious work began on the site. Excavators, scientists, and military personnel arrived. According to eyewitness accounts, including neighbors who watched everything from their windows, active operations continued at the site for years. There were stories of strange effects—burns, loss of consciousness, and unusual sensations among those who approached the layer. There are mentions of people connected to these studies whose fates ended tragically. The documents were classified. It was assumed that a large object existed—by some estimates, oval-shaped and about fifteen to twenty meters in size, partially extending under the house and into the garden, possibly lying beneath glacial moraine.
Work continued intermittently for nearly twenty years. When perestroika began and the Soviet Union started to collapse, everything was abruptly shut down. What exactly was recovered and what remains in the ground is still unclear.
Today, interest in this story has flared up with renewed intensity. Astrophysicist Beatriz Villarroel and researcher Dennis Osberg from the European Crash Retrieval Initiative personally visited Merivälja. They knocked on the door of the house. The owner did not open at first. However, a neighbor who had been watching the events for decades willingly talked for nearly an hour: about the equipment, the scientists, the military, and how the site had turned into an object of intense scrutiny. Later, the researchers contacted the owner—he refused further cooperation. In Ross Coulthart's Reality Check program, this story became part of a major investigation into Soviet UFOs. Villarroel links it to her own work on transients—highly reflective objects recorded on photographic plates even before the launch of the first satellites. Osberg draws parallels with the Baltic anomaly discovered by his team about three hundred kilometers from there.
An analysis of the fragments, conducted in 2017 at Tallinn University of Technology, showed a composition close to ferrochrome. But this result concerns only individual debris. The main body of the object, if it exists, has never been recovered and documented.
The researchers do not intend to stop. Villarroel and Osberg stated that they plan to contact the owner of the plot again and try to negotiate at least a non-invasive survey using ground-penetrating radar. This would allow them to see the soil layers, traces of past excavations, and possible remains of the object without earthworks. Within the framework of the European Crash Retrieval Initiative, the case remains a priority. However, the plot is in private ownership, and without the owner's consent, any work is impossible.
Questions remain open: what exactly caused such serious interest from the secret services and scientists, why work was carried out for years right in a residential area, and what might still be hidden under an ordinary garden plot. The story of Object M continues to attract those who seek answers beyond conventional explanations.
