Within the heart of Costa Rica's central coffee plantations, nestled among the dark green bushes, scientists have discovered a tiny resident previously unknown to science. This nocturnal frog, measuring less than four centimeters long with greenish skin and dark spots, lives precisely where coffee is cultivated.
It has been named the "spring frog," or Rana de las nacientes, a designation highlighting its connection to the springs and moist areas found within these plantations. Researchers from the University of Costa Rica and Argentine scientific institutions were responsible for this discovery. This endemic species is found exclusively in this region and appears to have adapted well to living among the coffee bushes.
Male frogs emit short, high-pitched calls by inflating their translucent throat sacs, and at night, they can be heard perched on branches. These frogs do not consume coffee berries; instead, they prey on small insects that also seek refuge in the shade provided by the plantations.
Such findings illustrate how agricultural landscapes can harbor hidden biodiversity. Coffee plantations offer shade, moisture, and food, creating conditions akin to natural forest edges. However, this delicate balance is vulnerable: agrochemicals applied in the fields can seep into the soil and water bodies where tadpoles develop.
Scientists point out that these toxins spread through the air and soil, eventually reaching the very springs crucial for the frogs' survival. While the precise extent of this threat has yet to be fully understood, it is already evident that even minor adjustments in farming practices could impact the new species' continued existence.
The discovery of the "spring frog" serves as a powerful reminder that nature can carve out niches even in areas extensively managed by humans. Preserving such habitats demands careful consideration of what substances are introduced into the soil and water systems of these plantations.
