Switzerland Opens a Regulatory Door for a Spot Bitcoin ETF

Edited by: Yuliya Shumai

In a country where banks have guarded secrets and gold for centuries, the regulator has suddenly allowed a fund to hold 100% of assets in bitcoin. On 20 October 2026, the Swiss FINMA approved the first spot Bitcoin ETF — the Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT) from BIT Asset Management — which will begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange as early as November.

This is not just a listing. FINMA granted a rare exception to the diversification rules: funds are usually required to spread risk, but bitcoin, with its long trading history and enormous volume, has received a special status. The fund falls into the category of "other funds for alternative investments" with elevated risk, yet with strict requirements for custody, operational risks and transparency for retail investors.

For the Swiss and for foreign brokers, this means simple access to bitcoin without the need to buy coins, store keys or worry about wallet security. SIX has confirmed that the ETF will be available to both local and foreign banks and brokers — around 90 market participants will be able to trade it from day one.

Behind this decision lies not only an interest in crypto but also a pragmatic calculation: Switzerland traditionally positions itself as a crypto hub, competing with the US and the EU. Unlike European rules requiring strict diversification, the Swiss approach allows a fund to concentrate on a single asset if it is sufficiently mature. At the same time, FINMA emphasizes protective measures: the fund's assets are segregated from the management company, risks are disclosed in detail in the documents, and the conduct of sellers is regulated under FIDLEG.

For the ordinary investor, this changes the picture. Instead of holding bitcoin on an exchange or in a cold wallet, one can buy a share in a regulated fund through an ordinary brokerage account. The risks do not disappear — volatility remains — but a layer of institutional protection and tax transparency is added.

Other providers have already filed applications for similar products, and FINMA does not rule out that ether or solana may follow bitcoin if they prove sufficient maturity. For now, the approval of BBIT signals that even the "wildest" asset can enter the traditional financial system if the regulator sees benefit for the market and protection for participants in it.

The Swiss precedent shows that crypto regulation is not only restrictions but also an opportunity for those who are ready to follow the rules of the game.
