Telegram hands control over crypto to a billion users — and absolves itself of responsibility-1

On Monday, August 31, 2026, Telegram began rolling out its own self-custodial Gram Wallet to select users. The wallet will become standard for more than a billion accounts in the coming weeks, and the former custodial Wallet will be renamed Walt and removed from default settings.

The decision looks like a logical step for a platform that has long experimented with crypto. Gram — the renamed Toncoin on the TON blockchain — is now built directly into the messenger. Users get instant transfers without fees, and network validators have approved the smart contract so that future updates won't require migrating funds. Pavel Durov called it "the largest deployment of a non-custodial wallet in history."

Behind the convenience lies a fundamental shift. Previously, most people held assets in custodial mode: keys with the operator, meaning access could be restored or accounts frozen. Now, by default, keys are only with the owner. It's like handing someone cash instead of a bank card: no one will freeze the transfer, but no one can help recover lost funds either.

For Telegram, the benefit is obvious. The platform lowers the barrier to Web3, attracts new users, and strengthens the TON ecosystem. For the average person, the consequences are twofold. On one hand, real control over money without intermediaries. On the other, full responsibility for the seed phrase or alternative recovery method. A mistake, phishing, or device loss now means irreversible loss of funds.

History has shown that mass adoption of self-custody requires not only technology but also habits. Most messenger users have never dealt with private keys. Telegram tries to simplify the process — without long phrases, with account and email binding — but the scale of a billion people makes any vulnerability global.

In the end, Telegram is not just adding a feature. It is changing the attitude toward money within its app: from "trust the platform" to "hold it yourself." The question is how ready users are to accept this freedom along with its risks.
