A major Citi client receives payment from a buyer in a stablecoin, while an ordinary dollar lands in the bank account. No wallets, no volatility, no crypto education. This is precisely what the new reality looks like, which Citigroup and Coinbase are creating as of 28 September 2026.
The bank and the crypto exchange have expanded a partnership announced back in October 2025. Now, through the Spring by Citi platform, institutional clients can accept stablecoins at the checkout. Coinbase processes the transaction on the blockchain and automatically converts the tokens into fiat, while Citi acts as the settlement bank. The business does not hold crypto for even a second.
In the opposite direction, Coinbase Virtual Accounts work on the basis of Citi Virtual Account Wallet. Dollars arriving in the account are instantly turned into stablecoins, and the business receives banking functionality without a separate crypto infrastructure. The launch is so far limited to the United States, but the scale is impressive: Citi processes around 6 trillion dollars daily.
Behind this deal lies a simple calculation. Banks retain control over settlements and client relationships, while crypto companies gain access to traditional rails and a huge client base. Businesses, in turn, are offered a new payment channel — more than 150 million stablecoin holders worldwide — without any need to change habits or bear the risks of holding digital assets.
Imagine a river where the water flows in both directions, but each person sees only the familiar shore. Stablecoins here are not a new currency but an invisible bridge between the old and the new financial systems. Companies gain the speed and global reach of the blockchain while preserving the familiar reporting and security of a bank.
Such partnerships change not only payments but also the very idea of what it means to "work with money." When the boundary between fiat and stablecoin erases, the question is no longer whether one should accept crypto, but who will be the first to offer clients the most convenient way to pay.
