Switzerland opens its door to the world: the first spot Bitcoin ETF with international access-1

In October 2026, the Swiss regulator FINMA gave the green light to the country's first spot Bitcoin ETF for retail investors. The BBIT fund from BIT Asset Management will begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange as early as November, and most importantly, foreign banks and brokers will be able to connect to it.

Unlike most European products, which are debt instruments carrying issuer risk, the Swiss ETF holds bitcoin directly. The fund's assets are legally segregated from the management company, which gives investors additional protection in the event of problems at the management company. FINMA made an exception to the diversification rules: bitcoin has a sufficient trading history and volumes for the fund to be able to invest all its assets in it.

For Switzerland, this is not just another financial product. The country has long positioned itself as a crypto hub, combining strict regulation with innovation. Now foreign market participants are getting a convenient channel for working with regulated bitcoin without the need to set up their own structures. At the same time, public sales of the fund are permitted only within Switzerland — in other countries, access will depend on local rules.

For the ordinary investor, this means a new way to add bitcoin to a portfolio through a familiar brokerage account, rather than through crypto exchanges with their risks. Instead of holding coins in a wallet or in an unregulated product, one can buy a share in a fund under FINMA supervision. True, volatility will not go anywhere: the ETF's price will track bitcoin's movements, which means the risks will remain high.

FINMA's decision highlights an important shift: regulators are beginning to acknowledge that mature crypto assets require a special approach. Switzerland was the first in Europe to offer specifically a spot ETF for retail clients, rather than another ETP. This could become a signal for other jurisdictions, but for now it remains a local advantage of the Alpine financial system.

Ultimately, the Swiss Bitcoin ETF is not just a tool for speculation, but another brick in building a more transparent and protected digital asset market. For those who have long been eyeing crypto, a regulated alternative is emerging that does not require giving up familiar financial intermediaries.
