In August 2026, a paper appeared on the philosophical archive PhilArchive that challenges a fundamental assumption of modern neuroscience. The author introduces the concept of 'superconsciousness'—a state of consciousness entirely independent of information processing and computational processes. According to the author, such a state exists and functions without input signals, internal representations, or any interaction with data. If this is true, then all dominant theories of consciousness need rethinking.
Three main theories come under fire.
Integrated Information Theory by Giulio Tononi (proposed in 2004) links consciousness to the quantity Φ—a mathematical measure of causal integration within a system.

All three approaches assume one common mechanism: consciousness is inseparable from information exchange. If superconsciousness exists without data, then these theories are not wrong, but merely incomplete.
The methodology of the work remains purely philosophical: the author does not conduct experiments but analyzes the logical foundations of existing theories. The main question is: can any of the known models describe a state of consciousness completely cut off from incoming information, from memory, and from internal representations? The answer appears to be no. But this immediately raises a second problem: how could such a state ever be detected and empirically confirmed if, by definition, it leaves no traces in the physical world?
Imagine a room where all windows and doors are tightly shut, with no screens, no sensors, and no memories. In the ordinary understanding, no experience can arise there—consciousness requires input. But the concept of superconsciousness claims the opposite: it is precisely in such complete isolation from information that true, undistorted consciousness arises. Not as a byproduct of computation, but as an initial condition, logically preceding any data processing and any physical processes.
The work does not claim empirical proof and consciously remains within the bounds of logical analysis. But its significance lies in revealing a blind spot: almost all modern theories of consciousness silently assume that consciousness is impossible without information exchange. What if this assumption is mistaken? If it is mistaken, then attempts to create artificial consciousness by mimicking algorithms may be a fundamentally wrong direction. Clinical criteria for assessing consciousness in non-verbal patients or patients in states of minimal consciousness may also prove untenable—as they rely on detecting reactions to information, rather than consciousness as such.
Thus, the new concept does not just add a word to the philosophical lexicon. It points to the logical limit of all information-centric approaches and forces us to re-ask: do we truly understand what consciousness is?
