In 2026, the Journal of Neuroscience published Joseph LeDoux's seminal article "My Fifty Years Thinking About Emotional Consciousness in the Brain" — the scientist's reflections on a path spanning half a century of neuroscience research. This is not a report of a new discovery, but a rare genre in modern science: an honest re-evaluation of one's own ideas. LeDoux traces the evolution of his thinking from early split-brain studies in the mid-1970s to the current understanding that behavioral fear responses and the conscious experience of emotions are not the same thing.

His journey began unusually. In the mid-1970s, LeDoux worked on classic split-brain studies with Michael Gazzaniga, investigating how each hemisphere of the brain processes information independently. These studies, conducted at Dartmouth Medical School, sparked in the young scientist a deep interest in consciousness — particularly, emotional consciousness. However, LeDoux soon realized that studying the human brain was difficult and moved to rats, where he could trace neural circuits in detail.

His classic fear conditioning experiments revealed the key role of the amygdala in forming defensive responses. A rat hears a sound followed by an electric shock, and soon freezes at the sound alone — classic Pavlovian conditioning. But here's the paradox that LeDoux pointed out even then: the activation of amygdala neurons upon hearing the sound is not equivalent to the feeling of fear. It is a behavioral response, an ancient survival system. And the feeling? It, in his conviction, requires more — metacognitive processes, where the cerebral cortex creates a representation of itself in a state of fear. The brain looks at its own activations, reflects, and from this self-relation, subjective experience arises.

In his new article, LeDoux systematically critiques what he calls the conceptual error of many emotion theories: equating the neural correlates of emotional behavior with emotions themselves. His own four decades of data on the amygdala have led him and his colleagues (including philosopher Richard Brown from LaGuardia Community College CUNY) to a more complex model: emotions are not neural circuits in the subcortex, but rather high-level representations arising from what the cortex does with all incoming signals. The difference between emotional and non-emotional consciousness, LeDoux argues, is not in the origin of the signals (both can start in the subcortex), but in which inputs the cortex processes and how it integrates them.

Crucially, LeDoux does not claim to solve the "hard problem" of consciousness — the question of why physical processes give rise to subjective experience. Instead, he emphasizes the need to clearly distinguish between functional aspects (what the system does) and phenomenal aspects (how the system feels itself). Many current theories, he notes, confuse these levels of analysis. His position is closer to the so-called Higher-Order Theory of consciousness, in which consciousness arises from representations of one's own mental states, than to conceptions of emotions as direct products of subcortical structures.

This work brings the science of consciousness back to a fundamental question: what are we actually measuring when we talk about "emotional consciousness"? When we record amygdala activity upon hearing a sound that precedes a shock, we are registering a defensive behavior — a survival tool honed by evolution. But consciousness is different. Understanding the distinction between defensive behavior and subjective experience remains critical not only for the neurobiology of normal emotions but also for the treatment of emotional disorders, where people often feel fear without apparent reason or, conversely, can act with cold calculation without experiencing fear.
