Agricultural Revolution from the USA: How Perennial Grain Saves Soils and Protects Crops from Climate Disasters-1

Amid increasingly frequent extreme weather events, American scientists are offering farmers not just new varieties, but an entirely different model of agriculture. Kernza perennial grain can radically improve depleted soils and make crops immune to droughts and destructive downpours.

Traditional agriculture, which provides humanity with wheat, corn, and rice, is based on annual crops. Every year, farmers must plow fields, plant seeds, apply fertilizers, and harvest, after which the land remains bare. This cycle has a high environmental cost: soil loses structure, carbon is released into the atmosphere, and the fertile topsoil is easily destroyed by wind and water.

But there may be a fundamental solution to this problem, which is already being tested and implemented in the USA.

The Secret Underground: Why Kernza Changes the Game

Kernza is a cultivated wild grass intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium). Unlike common wheat, which must be sown annually, Kernza is a perennial plant. After harvest, it does not die but continues to grow, forming a dense green cover that protects the land year-round.

However, the main secret of soil improvement is hidden not on the surface, but deep below it.

The root system of common wheat penetrates the soil to a maximum of 1–1,5 meters. Kernza roots can reach depths of up to 3,5–4,5 meters. This giant underground network works as both a natural pump and reinforcement:

  • Organic matter accumulation: As roots die and regrow, they leave behind a huge amount of organic matter, naturally fertilizing and structuring the soil.
  • Carbon sequestration: The perennial acts like a powerful sponge, pumping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere deep into the soil and helping combat the greenhouse effect.

A Double Shield Against Extreme Weather

It is the deep root system that makes Kernza an ideal answer to the two main scourges of the modern climate: droughts and abnormal downpours.

  1. Drought resistance: When the surface layer of soil dries out and annual crops begin to die from lack of moisture, Kernza continues to feed from deep aquifers. Its roots reach water where the roots of ordinary wheat simply cannot.
  2. Protection from downpours and floods: Extreme precipitation, which increasingly hits agricultural regions, washes away the topsoil (erosion) and leaches applied fertilizers into groundwater. The dense turf and intertwined roots of Kernza firmly bind the soil. During downpours, water does not run off in torrents, destroying fields, but is absorbed like a sponge, retaining moisture for subsequent dry periods.

From laboratory to consumer's table

For a long time, perennial grains were considered science fiction, as breeders could not get wild grasses to produce sufficiently large and abundant grain. However, in recent years, the Land Institute has achieved tremendous progress.

Today, Kernza is no longer just an experiment on test plots. The grain is successfully used for commercial purposes. It is processed into flour, which is distinguished by its high protein and fiber content, as well as a low glycemic index. Pasta, crispbreads, cereals, and even craft beer brewed with Kernza have already appeared on the market. Eco-brands and large food corporations are actively buying this grain to reduce their carbon footprint.

Challenges of the future

Despite the obvious environmental advantages, Kernza faces a major agronomic challenge — yield. At present, it is significantly inferior to traditional wheat. However, breeders are using both classical crossing methods and modern genomic technologies to increase grain size and overall crop yield annually.

Resonance in Europe and the world

European farmers and environmentalists are closely following American developments. As part of the implementation of the European Green Deal, the EU has set ambitious goals to reduce pesticide use and restore biodiversity. The introduction of perennial crops such as Kernza could become a key element of the European strategy for creating sustainable and climate-neutral agriculture.

The transition from annual to perennial grains is not just replacing one plant with another. It is a change in the very paradigm of farming: from depleting nature to restoring it, where the farmer gets a harvest without harming the land, but helping it heal.
