Belgian Grand Prix: Decisive Qualifying Day at the Legendary Spa Circuit-1

The Formula 1 season continues with one of the most anticipated weekends – the Belgian Grand Prix. Today, drivers will take to the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, where they will first complete the third free practice session and then battle for pole position in qualifying.

The third practice session will begin at 12:30 PM local time – which is 1:30 PM in Kyiv and 11:30 AM in Zurich. The qualifying session is scheduled for 4:00 PM in Belgium, or 5:00 PM in Kyiv and 3:00 PM in Zurich. It is the results of this session that will determine the starting grid for Sunday's race.

Last Chance to Find the Perfect Setup

The third practice session will be the final opportunity for teams to test their cars before qualifying. Engineers will need to analyze data from Friday's sessions, select aerodynamic settings, and understand how the tires behave on the long and fast Spa circuit.

This track forces teams to compromise. On the long straights, the car needs minimal drag and high top speed. However, in the high-speed medium-speed corners, drivers require sufficient downforce. An error in setup choice can cost several tenths of a second – and in a tight qualifying session, that's enough to lose several positions.

Spa Does Not Forgive Mistakes

Spa-Francorchamps is considered one of the most challenging and beloved tracks on the championship calendar. The lap length is 7.004 kilometers, making it the longest on the current Formula 1 calendar. Sunday's race will be 44 laps long.

The famous Eau Rouge — Raidillon complex, the long Kemmel straight, the fast Pouhon corner, and the treacherous Bus Stop chicane at the end demand precision, confidence, and bravery from the drivers. A single small mistake can be enough to ruin an entire qualifying lap.

The final sector will be particularly crucial. After nearly seven kilometers of pushing the limits, the driver must brake perfectly for the Bus Stop. Too cautious an entry will lead to lost time, while braking too late can negate a magnificent lap.

Weather Can Change Everything

Spa is also known for its unpredictable climate. Due to the track's extensive length, it can be raining in one section while another part remains completely dry. In such conditions, tire choice and when to go out on track become as important as the car's speed.

According to preliminary forecasts, the probability of precipitation remains high throughout the Belgian weekend. Therefore, teams must be prepared for sudden changes in conditions and a potential wet qualifying session.

The Battle for Pole Promises to Be Intense

Starting from pole position at Spa is important, but it doesn't always guarantee the lead after the first lap. The long Kemmel straight allows cars behind to use slipstream and attack the leader as they approach Les Combes. Therefore, it can even be advantageous for some drivers to start from second position if they can get a good start and benefit from the tow.

Nevertheless, pole position remains the most prestigious reward of Saturday. The record for the most pole positions at Spa belongs to Lewis Hamilton – he has won qualifying here six times.

Saturday's Main Intrigue

Today will reveal who has best adapted to the demands of the Belgian track. The third practice session will show the real speed of the cars, but only qualifying will give the final answer.

Spa rarely offers a predictable scenario. One perfect lap, sudden rain, a mistake in the final corner, or a well-timed track exit can completely change the starting grid.

Today – the battle for pole. Tomorrow – 44 laps on one of the most legendary tracks in the world.
