Humpback whale songs feature distinct sounds, phrases, recurring themes, and a complex structure of their own. However, new research has revealed something astonishing: this music unfolds not only through time but is also interwoven with the Ocean's spatial dimensions.
For the first time, scientists have meticulously correlated the structure of a humpback whale's song with its entire dive cycle. It was discovered that specific musical themes are linked to different phases of the underwater journey: descent, time spent at depth, and return to the surface.
It's as if the whale performs not merely a sequence of sounds, but a three-dimensional composition etched by its body's movement through the water column.
Six Years of Observation Off Maui
The study, published in Current Biology, was conducted off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, from 2018 to 2024.
Researchers observed 16 male humpback whales. During mating season, it is the males who perform lengthy and intricately organized songs that can last for hours and travel several kilometers through the water column.
Small, non-invasive suction-cup tags were temporarily attached to the animals' backs. These devices simultaneously recorded:
- sounds emitted by the whale;
- dive depth;
- body position and movement;
- duration of individual phases of the underwater journey.
After a certain period, the tags detached from the whales themselves and ascended to the surface. Researchers then located them and retrieved the collected recordings.
This method made it possible not only to hear the whale's song but also to observe its body's actions during the performance: how the animal dives, changes position, remains at a certain depth, and returns to the surface.
For the first time, sound and movement appeared as a single, inseparable process.
Some whales continued singing almost nonstop for up to 16 hours—during descent, at depth, and upon ascent to the surface.
Musical Themes Follow Movement
The humpback whale's song possesses a complex hierarchical organization.
Individual sounds combine into phrases. Phrases form recurring themes. A complete song is constructed from a sequence of themes. Upon finishing a composition, the whale begins it anew, capable of repeating this cycle for many hours straight.
The research revealed that musical themes are not randomly distributed across the different phases of a dive.
Themes performed during descent and ascent were found to be the most consistent. Their sequence was repeated across different animals and remained stable over various years of observation.
Conversely, at the deepest part of the dive, when the whale remained at a relatively constant depth, researchers discovered a greater variety of musical themes and higher variability in individual song elements.
At depth, the composition seemingly became more free and diverse.
Scientists hypothesize that the consistency of descent and ascent themes may be linked to physiological constraints. The whale must simultaneously regulate buoyancy, manage its oxygen supply, move, and produce sound.
These phases demand particular control, and the singer subordinates its music to them.
The more variable segments heard at depth might play a special role in sexual selection, allowing the male to showcase individual qualities. However, the precise significance of these differences still needs to be determined.
The Whale Performs Its Song With Its Entire Being
Previously, humpback whale songs were primarily studied as acoustic sequences. Researchers analyzed their frequency, rhythm, syntax, annual changes, and cultural transmission from one group of animals to another.
Yet, with this approach, the song seemed disconnected from the singer itself.
The new research offered a different perspective, viewing it as a holistic action involving the animal's entire body.
The whale doesn't merely sing while underwater. Its breath, movement, depth, physiological state, and the sound it creates all become parts of a single composition.
One theme accompanies the descent—this is the music of downward movement.
Another resonates at the deepest part of the dive—the music of depth and relative stability.
A subsequent theme emerges during the ascent—the music of returning to the surface and taking a new breath.
This creates a unique underwater score, which the whale composes not only with its voice but also with the trajectory of its own body. The whale doesn't merely perform a composition.
It embodies it with its entire being.
