Sometimes, the planet’s new symphony begins not with a song, but with a first breath.
On July 28, 2026, off the northern coast of Australia’s New South Wales, drone operator Alexander Forrest was observing the annual humpback whale migration for ORRCA—the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia.
During this period, thousands of whales journey along Australia's eastern coastline, traveling between their cold Antarctic feeding grounds and the warmer waters where they breed and give birth.
That particular day, the ocean was teeming with activity; some whales were heading north, while others had already begun their return journey south. However, amidst this bustle, Forrest observed a solitary adult female remaining in shallow waters and swimming with unusual slowness.
Initially, he assumed the whale was merely resting.
Moments later, the female surfaced. Forrest turned on his camera, expecting to capture her exhalation, but instead witnessed an event rarely observed by humans: the birth of a new whale.
From the blood-tinged water, a light-grey calf emerged. It swiftly rose to the surface to take its first breaths, and its mother almost immediately turned and swam towards it.
The camera continued to film their initial encounter, capturing the newborn whale learning to stay near the surface while its mother remained close, guiding its first movements in the ocean.
Forrest immediately reported the sighting to ORRCA, and soon the organization's drone operator Tanya Snowden and photographer Dominic Cotter-Dehoff joined him. The team then documented the behavior of the mother and calf until sunset, maintaining constant contact with researchers.
Filming was conducted from a distance of over 100 meters, in compliance with New South Wales wildlife protection regulations. The exact birth location is not being disclosed to protect both the mother and the calf.
This extraordinary event marked the fourth fully documented observation of a humpback whale birth. Significantly, it was the first such instance ever captured entirely from the air using a drone.
Before this, researchers had only three published observations of similar births. The aerial perspective uniquely allowed for a complete tracing of the mother and newborn's movements, revealing their relative positions in the water and providing details of behavior difficult to capture from a boat or directly from the ocean.
The collected video footage and observations will now undergo detailed scientific analysis. These are expected to form the basis of a peer-reviewed scientific publication, potentially expanding knowledge about humpback whale reproduction, maternal behavior, and the very first minutes of a calf's life.
This is not merely rare footage; it offers a new window into one of the ocean's most hidden life processes.
