Beneath the layer of fallen leaves in Madagascar's forests hides far more life than is commonly assumed. An international team of scientists has described seven new species of diamond frogs of the genus Rhombophryne, and this discovery has already influenced plans to expand protected areas.
The study, published in August 2026 in the journal Vertebrate Zoology, was the culmination of twelve years of work. The scientists combined field expeditions, analysis of museum specimens, including century-old ones, DNA sequencing, and studies of morphology and mating calls. As a result, the total number of known species in the genus has grown to 27.
These small amphibians spend most of their lives underground or among leaves, making them easy to miss even during thorough searches. The new species differ not only genetically but also in body shape, coloration, and habits: some dig burrows, others are active after rain, and still others have bright markings on their thighs.
Importantly, data on the distribution of the new species have already been put into practice. In March 2026, at a working meeting on the "Biodiversity 30×30" program in Madagascar, several species, including Rhombophryne quentini, became an argument in favor of strengthening and expanding protected zones.
At the same time, 24 of the 27 known species of the genus are threatened with extinction, and two are likely in critical condition. Madagascar's forests continue to shrink, and precise knowledge of where these frogs live helps set conservation priorities.
The discovery shows how incomplete our understanding of biodiversity remains even in well-studied regions, and how timely species descriptions can directly influence decisions on ecosystem conservation.
