In the UK, fees for seating parents next to their children under 14 years old have been abolished

At Heathrow Airport, a young mother with a two-year-old son in her arms nervously checks her boarding passes: the seats turned out to be at opposite ends of the cabin, and the surcharge for reassigning them has already eaten up part of the trip budget. From October 2026, such scenes at British airports should become a thing of the past.

The UK government has introduced a rule obliging airlines to seat parents or accompanying adults next to children under 14 years old free of charge. Previously, such a service could cost up to 104 pounds on a round trip. At the same time, fees for correcting simple errors in names are being abolished — previously this sometimes cost up to 40 pounds.

The innovation became part of a package of measures to protect passengers and combat "petty fees" which, according to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, "squeeze the last money out of family budgets." Official statements emphasize the goal — to restore passengers' sense of fairness and ease everyday expenses amid the rising cost of living.

Notably, many British carriers, including easyJet and Ryanair, are already saying that they had not previously charged such fees or had followed the recommendations of the Civil Aviation Authority. However, uniform rules for all airlines flying from the UK eliminate discrepancies and guarantee the same conditions regardless of whether it is a low-cost carrier or a flagship airline.

The changes fit into a broader trend: after the pandemic and amid inflation, regulators in Europe and the US are increasingly intervening in airline pricing, limiting hidden fees. Family trips, which previously seemed a luxury because of additional charges, are becoming slightly more affordable — especially for those who fly infrequently and plan their budget carefully.

Ultimately, the rule not only saves money but also restores an element of predictability and humanity to air travel: parents no longer have to choose between their child's safety and extra expenses.
