Consciousness is more like a film in which there are barely noticeable pauses between frames.

Imagine you're reading a book, solving a problem, or simply gazing out a window. Suddenly, it's as if someone pressed a 'pause' button.

Your mind contains no thoughts, no memories, no internal images. Everything returns within a second, but this brief interval seems to slip from your memory.

This very state is what neuroscientists at the Paris Brain Institute have been investigating.

During extended cognitive tests, experiment participants periodically reported moments when their consciousness contained absolutely no content—neither words, nor visual images, nor internal sensations. Simultaneously, electroencephalography (EEG) revealed characteristic changes in brain activity.

During these periods, the functional connectivity of the cerebral cortex decreased, meaning the interaction between distant brain regions weakened. Concurrently, the efficiency of visual information processing declined, and the late positive component of event-related potentials (P300), which appears approximately 250–300 milliseconds after a visual stimulus and reflects its conscious processing, practically vanished.

Scientists refer to this state as 'mind blanking.' It differs fundamentally from typical mind-wandering.

During mind-wandering, the brain actively continues to generate internal images, memories, and reflections, but these are simply unrelated to the task at hand. With 'mind blanking,' however, the flow of conscious content temporarily ceases.

Researchers estimate that such episodes can account for 5 to 20% of waking time. They most frequently occur after prolonged mental exertion, due to fatigue, lack of sleep, or during certain meditative practices.

What Happens in the Brain?

One primary hypothesis suggests that specific areas of the cerebral cortex briefly enter a state resembling localized sleep. Unlike regular sleep, only certain neural networks 'switch off,' while others continue to function.

As a result, the individual remains awake, capable of responding to external stimuli and performing simple actions, yet the mechanisms responsible for forming conscious thoughts and perceptions temporarily cease to operate. For now, this remains the most plausible explanation rather than a definitively proven mechanism.

What Does This Mean for Theories of Consciousness?

The study's findings proved particularly interesting for contemporary consciousness research.

According to Global Workspace Theory, conscious experience arises when information is disseminated across a broad network of brain regions. During 'mind blanking,' signs of such global information dissemination significantly weaken, which aligns well with this model.

Higher-Order Theory, however, faces a different question. If thoughts are absent during a 'blanking' moment, how is a person later able to report that they were not thinking about anything? It is likely that the awareness of having no thoughts forms only after the state concludes.

Nonetheless, these findings are consistent with the idea that a basic level of wakefulness can be maintained by localized neural network activity, even without full global information exchange among various brain departments.

A computer can serve as a good analogy.

Sometimes, the monitor briefly goes blank, even though the processor continues to perform calculations. The computer hasn't turned off—the display has simply disappeared temporarily.

Perhaps something similar occurs during 'mind blanking'. The brain continues to function, supports vital processes, and responds to the environment, but it temporarily ceases to generate the subjective content of consciousness.

Why Is This Important?

Researchers note that episodes of 'mind blanking' are more common in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders.

If the characteristic electroencephalographic markers of this state can be definitively confirmed, they could become a new tool for studying attention disorders and the mechanisms of consciousness. However, clinical application is still a long way off, requiring further research.

A Broader Perspective

This research suggests that consciousness may not be a continuous stream of experience at all. Instead, it might resemble a film where subtle pauses exist between frames.

And perhaps, it is precisely these brief periods of inner silence that help us comprehend one of modern neuroscience's most complex mysteries: how the activity of billions of neurons transforms into the subjective experience of the 'self'.
