A thought arises almost instantly. Another follows, then a memory, a worry, a plan for the evening — and within a few minutes we find ourselves mentally somewhere entirely different. Meditation begins at that very moment: a person notices that attention has wandered and brings it back.

At first glance, it seems almost unremarkable. But if this action is repeated regularly, it becomes a training for the brain systems responsible for attention and self-regulation.

Neuropsychologist Gabriel Martin Villeda Villafaña from the National Autonomous University of Mexico emphasizes that the goal of meditation is not to "clear the mind" or stop thinking. Thoughts continue to arise. The practice lies in the ability to notice their emergence and redirect attention to the breath, bodily sensations, or what is happening in the present moment.

Behind this simple action lies the work of an entire network of brain regions. This includes the prefrontal cortex, involved in attention and behavioral control; the anterior cingulate cortex, associated with error detection and attention shifting; the insula, which processes internal body signals; and the hippocampus and amygdala — structures closely linked to memory and emotional responses.

Researchers attempted to determine how noticeable the effects of such training are in a large meta-analysis that combined 111 randomized studies and more than 9 500 participants. The result was interesting precisely for its moderation. Regular meditation practice was associated with small to moderate improvements in executive attention, working memory, inhibitory control, the ability to switch between tasks, and sustained attention. However, no convincing improvement was found in episodic memory or processing speed.

In other words, meditation does not make the entire brain "more powerful." Rather, it trains specific processes — above all, the ability to manage attention and notice when it slips away.

Equally interesting is the emotional side of this process. Our brain can react to a threat, an unpleasant memory, or an anxious thought before we have time to fully process what is happening. Systems related to emotional reactivity, including the amygdala, are activated.

Meditation research shows that regular practice may be associated with changes in the interaction between cortical control systems and regions involved in emotional reactivity. This does not mean that fear, anxiety, or irritation disappear. Rather, a person may notice an emerging reaction earlier and have the opportunity not to follow it automatically.

And here meditation touches on one of the most intriguing questions in the neuroscience of consciousness.

Usually, we not only think but also easily become immersed in our own thoughts. A memory captures attention, anxiety turns into a chain of scenarios, irritation into action. During practice, an additional step appears: a person notices the very fact that they are currently thinking, feeling, or remembering.

This state is called meta-awareness.

Instead of "I am anxious," a different experience arises: "I notice that anxiety is arising now." The content of consciousness remains the same, but the relationship to it changes.

There is currently no basis to claim that meditation creates new "centers of consciousness" or by itself expands phenomenal consciousness. However, research shows that it can train the processes that determine how we direct attention to our own inner experience and how automatically we react to it.

Effects are also found in other areas. A meta-analysis of 18 randomized studies involving more than 1 600 people showed that mindfulness practices can improve sleep quality compared to some non-specific control interventions. But no clear advantage over specialized treatments for sleep disorders was found.

Thus, the scientific picture turns out to be far more interesting than promises that meditation can "reprogram the brain." It is not a universal remedy, and the magnitude of the effect depends on the type of practice, the duration of sessions, and individual characteristics.

But perhaps the most important mechanism lies in a very simple repeated action. Attention wandered after a thought. The person noticed it. And brought it back. A few seconds later, it wandered again — and was brought back again.

Meditation turns out to be not a training in the absence of thoughts, but a training in returning.

Thoughts continue to arise. Emotions remain. The brain continues to react to what is happening. But between an internal event and an automatic reaction, space for a conscious response may gradually appear.

And it is precisely this small gap that is perhaps one of the most interesting outcomes of the practice.
