On July 22, 2026, the E/V Nautilus team continued their exploration of the deep-sea regions of the Mariana Trench. This time, the remotely operated vehicle Little Hercules descended to the abyssal plain approximately 185 nautical miles northeast of Urakas Island, also known as Farallon de Pajaros.
At a depth of over 5,800 meters, researchers and viewers of the live broadcast saw the seabed in this particular part of the region for the first time. And it turned out to be far from empty.
Marine Snow: Food Falling from the Light
The abyssal plain seems like a silent desert.
There is no sunlight here. The temperature is close to freezing, and the pressure is hundreds of times greater than atmospheric pressure. Yet, life on the seabed is connected to what happens far above.
From the illuminated layers of the ocean, marine snow continuously descends – tiny particles of organic matter: fragments of algae, remains of organisms, and waste products of plankton.
Their journey can take weeks and months.
For many deep-sea animals, this slow organic rain becomes a crucial source of nutrition.
The cameras captured a well-fed sea cucumber – a holothurian using the organic-rich sediment, and a long-stemmed, eight-rayed coral Umbellula, also known as a sea pen. Raising its polyps towards the current, it captured food particles directly from the water.
At a depth we call almost lifeless, its unhurried feast continued.
The 'Pancake' Sea Urchin
One of the most intriguing encounters was with an unusual sea urchin.
Its body was so flat that the team immediately gave it the informal nickname 'pancake sea urchin'.
Experts from the Scientist Ashore network, who remotely observed the dive, suggested that the animal might belong to a yet undescribed species.
For now, this is only a preliminary hypothesis.
To officially recognize a new species, scientists will need specimens, detailed morphological studies, and likely genetic analysis.
But even the appearance of such a candidate serves as a reminder: there are still forms of life on Earth that are yet to be named.
An Anemone That Didn't Want to Stay Put
Equally unexpected was the encounter with a large deep-sea anemone.
Anemones are usually considered sedentary animals, attached to the substrate by their base. However, this individual was slowly rolling across the seabed.
Similar behavior has been observed in some deep-sea anemones: they can roll, slide, or seemingly perform somersaults on their basal disk.
But scientists are still unsure about the exact role of the animal's active movements and the bottom currents, and why anemones choose this method of locomotion.
Sometimes, a discovery doesn't begin with an encounter with an unknown species.
Sometimes, an already familiar creature suddenly does something completely unexpected – and shows how incomplete our understanding of its life is.
Those Who Catch Food in the Dark
During the dive, researchers also observed other inhabitants of the abyss.
A starfish from the order Brisingida raised its numerous arms into the current to catch falling organic particles.
Nearby was a predatory sponge with tissues of an unusual, almost 'candy-like' shape.
And mysterious spiral tracks stretched across the sediment.
At the end of the video, their possible creator appeared – an acorn worm, Enteropneusta. Feeding on the organic-rich soil, these animals process the sediment and leave behind characteristic trails.
Even a trace on the mud here tells a story of someone's invisible life.
A Surface Trace at Depth
However, not every encounter brought joy.
At a depth of nearly six kilometers, the cameras found a plastic balloon with a ribbon.
A single small object among organisms that have adapted to the conditions of the abyss for millions of years.
It ended up where human technology only reaches during rare expeditions.
This image prevents us from perceiving the deep ocean as an isolated world.
Everything is connected.
What humans release, discard, or lose on the surface can travel a great distance and end up even at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
A World That Knows How to Surprise Us
Each deep-sea dive changes more than just scientific maps.
It changes the scale of our understanding of our own planet.
The Mariana Trench has been explored before. Yet, each new route brings organisms, behaviors, and traces of life that scientists have not observed here before.
The ocean doesn't reveal itself all at once. It shows itself gradually – area by area, observation by observation, question by question.
And perhaps, the most valuable aspect of such expeditions is not just the possible new species or previously unfilled behavior.
They restore our ability to pause and look at the Earth with wonder again.
