On the steep slopes of Darwin Volcano on Isabela Island in the Galapagos, where wind and drought have tested every plant for centuries, in 2007 biologists discovered on the brink of extinction a rarest endemic — just six bushes of the Galapagos snapdragon. Today, thanks to thirty years of work by the Charles Darwin Foundation, there are twenty-eight adult individuals, and they have not only survived but are spontaneously reproducing in the wild. This breakthrough achievement was reported in August 2026.
The story began with a single herbarium specimen collected in 1962 near Caleta Tagus. For a long time, the species was considered extinct: goats and pigs introduced by humans destroyed the archipelago's vegetation, almost wiping out this species from the face of the earth. By 2007, only six bushes of Galvezia leucantha remained on the rocky slopes. Scientists collected seeds and began a paradoxically complex task: out of 1800 collected seeds, only a few dozen germinated in the laboratory. All viable plants were grown in nurseries and between 2017 and 2024 were gradually transferred to their historical range — to two habitats: Playa Tortuga Negra and Caleta Tagus.
The key to success was special Groasis Waterboxx containers. These autonomous devices collect night dew and rainwater, supplying moisture in doses through a wick inserted into the soil — about 50 milliliters per day. The paradox is that this minimal amount is insufficient for optimal plant development, which stimulates roots to grow deeper in search of moisture. When roots reach wetter soil layers, the plant enters a phase of active growth and can survive on its own. Seedling survival reached one hundred percent. The plants survived several severe droughts, bloomed, and in 2021, for the first time in the history of species restoration, produced natural seedlings without human help.
The project showed that even severely damaged island ecosystems can be restored through diligent work, scientific approach, and consideration of local conditions. The Galápagos Verde 2050 program of the Charles Darwin Foundation demonstrates how combining greenhouse propagation with field reintroduction can bring a species back to life. The success with Galvezia leucantha now becomes a model for saving other rare endemics of the Galapagos and other archipelagos worldwide. The study was published in the journal Nature Conservation.
Over thirty years of work, biologists have not just brought one species back from the brink of survival. They proved that persistent, seemingly unnoticed effort — annual monitoring, careful care of each bush, experimenting with methods — can reverse the course of extinction.
