In the protected corners of Australia, where human predators have long displaced local inhabitants, eastern quolls are again producing offspring. These small marsupial predators, once widespread on the mainland, disappeared from there more than half a century ago, but breeding and reintroduction programs are yielding the first tangible results.
On the mainland, eastern quolls (Dasyurus viverrinus) are considered functionally extinct, but wild populations survive in Tasmania. There, individuals released from captivity successfully interbreed with wild ones, enhancing genetic diversity. On the mainland, the animals are placed in reserves fenced off from foxes and cats, where females are already carrying young—up to six in one pouch.
The successes of Sydney Zoo and other centers show that mixing adults and young individuals upon release increases the chances of reproduction. In recent years, several dozen quolls have been released, and the first generations born in new conditions have already appeared. This is not just an increase in numbers, but a restoration of the species' role in the ecosystem—as a nocturnal hunter of insects and small animals.
The main threats—introduced predators and habitat loss—require constant control. Fenced areas provide temporary refuge, but long-term success depends on expanding such zones and reducing pressure on nature beyond them. Each new generation of quolls reminds us how fragile the connections in Australian fauna are.
Such projects prove that targeted breeding and reintroduction efforts can return species to historical territories if combined with habitat protection.
