New York overtook Bangkok to become the world's best culinary city

Edited by: Svitlana Velhush

For the first time in several years, New York has reclaimed the title of the planet's best culinary city, overtaking Bangkok at the World Culinary Awards 2026. The title has been changing hands for the fourth year in a row: in 2023 it went to Paris, in 2024 to Hanoi, in 2025 to Bangkok, and now to the metropolis on the Hudson.

The vote, in which industry professionals' votes weigh twice as much as those of ordinary users, reflects not merely popularity but the depth and diversity of the gastronomic offering. Bangkok retained its lead in Asia, but the global title moved on.

New York's strength lies in its five boroughs, where every immigrant community has left its mark. In Queens, in the Flushing and Jackson Heights neighborhoods, on a single street you can find Thai street food, Nepalese momo, Mexican tacos and Vietnamese banh mi. The city's official tourism guide for 2026 specifically highlights East and Southeast Asian cuisine in these quarters.

In Manhattan the emphasis is on Italian pizzerias and Ukrainian varenyky in the East Village — at the restaurant Veselka they serve borscht and pirogi. Such a mosaic arises not from a single dominant style but from centuries of migration that still shape the urban fabric.

Unlike Bangkok, where the strength lies in street stalls and a single Thai tradition, New York offers the traveler literally "a map of the world on a plate." This is not diversity for diversity's sake: each dish carries the story of a specific neighborhood and its residents.

That same year the United States also received the title of the world's best culinary destination. For a tourist, this means that even a short trip to New York can become a full-fledged gastronomic tour across continents — without flights or visas.

In the end, the choice between the two cities comes down to what the traveler is seeking: the concentrated authenticity of a single culture or the living mosaic of many.
