Naming emotions quiets the amygdala: neuroscience confirms ancient mindfulness practices

In an fMRI scanner, volunteers looked at photographs of angry or frightened faces. When they chose the word "anger" or "fear," amygdala activity dropped noticeably; when they instead picked the name "Harry" or "Sally," the alarm signal remained the same.

This observation, obtained in a study of 30 participants at UCLA, calls into question the familiar notion that an emotional reaction is a purely automatic process that cannot be directly controlled by verbal means. If simply assigning a label can "hit the brakes," then the mechanisms of affect regulation turn out to be more closely tied to language than many theories had assumed.

The study, published in Psychological Science and Psychosomatic Medicine, showed a simultaneous increase in activity in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex — a region involved in verbalizing emotional experience. Participants with higher mindfulness scores on the questionnaire displayed even more pronounced inhibition of the amygdala. However, the work relies on a small sample and does not include long-term observation of clinical outcomes.

From the standpoint of predictive processing theory, naming an emotion can be understood as refining a prediction: the brain receives additional information about its own state and reduces the weight of the prediction error. This does not abolish the phenomenal experience, but it changes its availability for further processing — the point where Global Workspace Theory and Higher-Order Theories of consciousness diverge.

Imagine a driver who sees a yellow light: he does not switch off the engine, but merely moves his foot to the brake. In the same way, verbalization does not destroy the emotion but redirects its energy, without requiring a person to deliberately "improve their well-being."

If the effect is reliably reproduced, clinical practice will be able to rely not only on the intuition of Buddhist teachers but also on measurable changes in prefrontal-limbic dynamics. The question that remains open: how universal this mechanism is beyond laboratory faces and Western students.
