The world has a new tiny hero.
The Invertebrate of the Year 2026 according to The Guardian is the leaf sheep β Costasiella kuroshimae, an amazing sea slug that looks as if nature decided to combine a sheep, a leaf, and a drop of green light into one creature.
It is only a few millimeters in size β about the size of a grain of rice. But it was this tiny creature that managed to beat out much larger and more spectacular rivals and win the hearts of readers.
A sheep that can 'run on solar power'
The leaf sheep's main superpower sounds almost fantastical.
It feeds on algae, but it doesn't just digest them. The slug knows how to keep chloroplasts inside its body β the cellular structures that plants use for photosynthesis.
In other words, some of the algae's 'solar panels' continue to work inside the leaf sheep itself.
Thanks to this, it can receive additional energy from light.
This phenomenon is called kleptoplasty and is found only in a few marine organisms.
For a creature only a few millimeters in size, this looks almost like natural magic.
Why it looks like a sheep
The slug got its English name β leaf sheepβ thanks to its unusual appearance.
On its head are small growths that resemble ears, and its back is covered with green leaf-like appendages.
Because of this, in photographs it really does look like a miniature cartoon sheep grazing somewhere in an underwater meadow.
Only instead of grass, there are corals and algae all around.
Victory in an unusual contest
The Invertebrate of the Year contest was created to draw attention to animals that rarely receive as much love and protection as pandas, tigers, or whales.
In the final, the leaf sheep competed against some very unusual species.
Among them were the giant Patagonian bumblebee, the horseshoe crab, and other amazing invertebrates.
Second place ultimately went to Bombus dahlbomii β one of the largest bumblebees in the world, which lives in South America.
Third place went to the ancient horseshoe crab, whose representatives have existed on Earth for hundreds of millions of years.
But the hearts of the readers were won by the tiny green sheep.
Small creatures are important too
The history of the contest is not just a reason to smile at a cute photo.
Invertebrates make up a huge part of the animal kingdom and perform many indispensable functions.
They pollinate plants, recycle organic matter, maintain soil health, serve as food for other animals, and form entire marine ecosystems.
At the same time, many of them remain almost invisible to humans.
That is precisely why the popularity of the leaf sheep matters.
