The Concept of the "Impossible" in the Casio Watch at $80 000 with a Blue Sapphire Case

Casio has unveiled the MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire — the first in G-Shock history and at the same time the most expensive watch the brand has ever created. The price of 80 thousand US dollars immediately catches the eye, but the story of this piece is even more astonishing: eight years of development, exactly 20 examples for the entire world, and a case with a bezel carved entirely from lab-grown blue sapphire — a material that has traditionally never been used in constructions claiming G-Shock's shock resistance.

The project was born in 2018 as part of the Dream Project, when the G-D5000 was created from 18-karat gold with a prototype sapphire case. But that prototype could not withstand G-Shock's shock-resistance standards. After the departure of the legendary creator of G-Shock, Kikuo Ibe, the MR-G team continued the work. Research showed that dividing the outer case into several interacting components significantly increases impact resistance. This discovery came to life in the Multi-Guard Structure, which debuted in titanium with the MRG-B5000 model in 2022. Then began the Blue Rose Project — the name alludes to the blue rose, the legendary symbol of the impossible in nature — with the goal of adapting this construction to sapphire. Eight years later, in 2026, the work culminates in the MRG-D5000.

The screwless Multi-Guard Structure is the heart of the engineering solution. The bezel and case are composed of separate sapphire elements, assembled like a three-dimensional puzzle without a single screw, which could have created a stress concentration point and led to a crack. Instead, the components are joined by means of complex interlocking joints inspired by the traditional Japanese carpentry technique of wooden frame construction, where overlapping tenons provide strength without nails or screws. Thanks to this architecture, impact loads are distributed across many points, minimizing the risk of fracture. At the same time, the watch retains water resistance to a depth of 200 meters and passes the full range of G-Shock tests. The case thickness is 16,5 millimeters — noticeably greater than that of the titanium MRG-B5000 counterparts, which have a thickness of 12,9 millimeters, but this is necessary for the multilayer sapphire construction.

The functionality remains true to the G-Shock philosophy: Gallium Tough Solar charging, Multi Band 6 radio synchronization, stopwatch, timer, five alarms and time display in all time zones of the world. The dial features a brickwork pattern applied by vapor deposition with inscriptions in 24-karat gold. The Grade 5 titanium case back also holds a sapphire insert and the personal serial number of each of the 20 examples — this is not merely a watch, but a collector's artifact.

Each example is assembled by hand by a single master at the legendary Casio factory in Yamagata — the very "mother" factory of G-Shock, where only the highest-qualified specialists work, bearing the titles of "Medalist" and "Meister." Distribution in the United States is strictly limited: only six watches will reach the American market, with a phased release from December 2026 to June 2027. In Japan, sales are organized through a closed lottery — a mechanism designed to ensure fairness under conditions of exceptional demand.

For completeness, it is worth mentioning the sister models from the Blue Rose Project. The titanium version MRG-B5000SA-2 is equipped with sapphire inserts, released in a run of 500 examples and priced at $6600. The more budget-friendly model GMW-B5000SB-1A2 offers small sapphire elements in the Blue Rose style, costs about $680 and is the most accessible entry into the project. But the full-profile sapphire case of the MRG-D5000 remains a unique achievement and the most ambitious expression of the Casio concept that is still called "making the impossible possible" — a combination of a material always considered fragile with extreme shock resistance in a single production piece.
