Apple has patented wearables with automatic switching to bone conduction for private calls

Apple has received a patent for an audio system for wearable devices that automatically redirects private calls and notifications to bone conduction. Ordinary sounds continue to be reproduced through conventional speakers. The patent titled "Bone conduction transducers for privacy" describes head-worn devices such as AirPods or smart glasses, where the system identifies private content and switches it to vibrations transmitted through the bones of the skull.

The patent states that the device analyzes the incoming signal: if a communication is deemed private — a call, a Siri response, or a notification — the sound is routed to the bone transducer. This prevents sound leakage into the surrounding environment, unlike conventional speakers, where sound may be audible to neighbors. The patent covers various form factors: headphones, earbuds, and glasses, which aligns with Apple's plans for developing wearables.

The idea is not new for the company: Apple filed similar patents in 2020–2021, including hybrid systems with frequency separation. The new document specifies automatic privacy detection without manual user settings. This simplifies use in public places, where sound leakage from headphones remains a problem.

Implementation will require precise operation of context-recognition algorithms. The patent does not disclose specific models or timelines for appearing in products. Similar technologies have already been tested in other brands, but Apple emphasizes integration with the ecosystem and a focus on privacy.

The patent strengthens Apple's position in the field of audio privacy, but it will take time for refinement and testing before a commercial product. Users should keep an eye on updates to AirPods and the company's future glasses.
