Young white storks, barely having left the nest, face a choice of routes that largely depends on their surroundings. A new study, published in the journal Diversity, reveals how landscape types influence the birds' movements in different behavioral states—from foraging to migration.

White storks (Ciconia ciconia) traditionally nest in Europe, and their populations have shown changes in migratory strategies in recent decades. Scientists tracked young individuals using GPS transmitters and analyzed how open fields, water bodies, or forest patches alter flight speed and direction. When actively foraging, the birds tended to linger in areas with a high density of small animals and insects, avoiding dense thickets.

During preparation for migration, the pattern shifted: young storks preferred routes along river valleys and agricultural lands, where it's easier to gain altitude and conserve energy. Apparently, open spaces reduce the risk of collisions and facilitate orientation using visual landmarks. Data indicate that during rest or roosting periods, the birds chose areas with less anthropogenic pressure.

Interestingly, the behavioral state determined not only the choice of location but also the overall movement strategy. When storks were in an "exploratory" mode, they more frequently experimented with new territories, even if those were less favorable in terms of food resources. This suggests that young birds learn from their own experience, adapting their behavior to specific environmental conditions.

The study underscores the importance of preserving mosaic landscapes: a combination of fields, water bodies, and sparse woodlands gives birds more flexibility. Amidst climate change and urbanization, such data helps predict how populations will respond to the transformation of their familiar habitats.

Maintaining landscape diversity in key European migratory corridors remains one of the most effective ways to support the well-being of white storks.
