Every evening, millions of people return home along congested routes, and at home, they are met not by silence, but by the bright light of street lamps and windows. A new study, published in Frontiers in Psychology on 17 August 2026, shows that it is the subjective perception of commuting stress, rather than just its duration, that becomes the primary link between daily travel and deteriorating mental health.
The authors—a group of researchers from China—analyzed data from 7093 working adults in Jiayuguan. They created a Perceived Commuting Stress Index (PCSI), which takes into account not only travel time but also feelings of loss of control, discomfort, and uncertainty. It turned out that the objective characteristics of the commute affect depression and anxiety primarily through this subjective filter.
The influence of nighttime lighting is particularly noteworthy. Satellite data on residential nighttime light (NTL) showed that the brighter the light around the home, the stronger the connection between commuting stress and symptoms of mental distress. Nighttime lighting apparently interferes with recovery—a process that should occur after the workday.
Within the framework of the theory of environmental stress (Lazarus and Folkman), it is the cognitive appraisal of a situation that determines whether a burden turns into chronic stress. When a person cannot "switch off" after a long journey due to constant light, mental resources are depleted faster. This is not just an inconvenience: circadian rhythms are disrupted, sleep quality declines, and consequently, so does the ability to cope with the following day.
Imagine an office worker who spends an hour on a crowded bus, and at home sees not a dark room, but a glowing city outside the window. The recovery that should take place in silence and darkness is replaced by additional stimulation. The study confirms: with high NTL, the effect of commuting stress on mental health is amplified.
Thus, the problem extends beyond transportation. The urban environment acts as a system where daytime burdens and nighttime conditions reinforce each other. This requires not only road improvements but also thoughtful lighting of residential areas—taking into account the human need for true darkness for recovery.
