The search for a new James Bond is gradually turning into a separate series — only without an official trailer, without a confirmed actor, and with an endless amount of rumors.
More familiar names have long been appearing on lists of potential candidates: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Aaron Pierre.
But now, the attention of some fans has been drawn to another name — Tom Francis.
And what is interesting here is that the general audience barely knows him yet.
Who is Tom Francis
Tom Francis is a British actor and singer who is currently 27 years old.
Tom Francis is a real, highly acclaimed British stage actor, and it is no coincidence that he has become one of the top favorites in the race for the role of the new James Bond, precisely because of his combination of talent, age, and lack of overexposure in mainstream cinema.
The major breakthrough in his career came thanks to the role of Joe Gillis in the new production of the musical Sunset Boulevard by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The show first caused a real sensation in London's West End and then moved to Broadway.
It was this role that brought Francis an Olivier Award, and later — a nomination for a Tony Award.
In other words, we are not just looking at a handsome new face, but an actor who has already proven on stage that he knows how to hold the attention of a massive audience.
Why is he being linked to Bond at all?
For now, it is important to state clearly: there is no official confirmation that Tom Francis is on the shortlist of candidates for the role of 007.
But his name is not appearing in discussions by accident.
In recent years, one recurring thought has been heard more and more regarding the future of Bond: the producers might bet on a young British actor who is not yet too strongly associated with other major franchises.
And Francis truly fits this image very well.
He is British.
He is 27 years old.
He is young enough to play Bond for many years.
And at the same time, for the majority of moviegoers, he remains practically a blank slate.
And for the role of 007, this can be a huge advantage.
Bond does not have to be a superstar beforehand
The history of the franchise has already shown more than once that James Bond does not necessarily have to go to the most famous actor of his generation.
Sometimes it is more advantageous to cast someone whom the public has not yet managed to associate too strongly with another character.
Then the new performer does not bring a pre-existing image with him.
He gets the opportunity to become Bond himself.
That is precisely why the candidacy of a theater actor like Francis looks much more interesting than it seems at first glance.
He knows how to work with a live audience, command the stage, sing, move, and create a character without the help of editing and special effects.
For Bond, such qualities may prove to be no less important than muscles or experience in action films.
And what will the next Bond actually be like?
For now, the main thing is known: the new 007 era will be shaped by director Denis Villeneuve.
The screenplay is being written by Steven Knight.
And the mere combination of these names hints that the next Bond may differ significantly from previous versions of the hero.
Villeneuve knows how to create cold tension, scale, and very strong characters without unnecessary fuss.
Therefore, it is quite possible that the new 007 will be younger, more serious, and psychologically more complex.
If that is the case, choosing a less obvious actor would look quite logical.
For now, just a beautiful rumor
As of today, Tom Francis is more of an interesting fan-favorite candidate than a confirmed contender.
There is no information about his auditions.
There is no confirmation from the studio.
There is no official announcement.
But it is precisely such names that sometimes turn out to be the most intriguing. And such rumors do circulate.
Because the new James Bond does not necessarily have to be someone we have already seen in ten blockbusters.
Sometimes it is much more interesting to watch an actor become a global star right before our eyes.
And if the producers truly want to choose a young Briton with strong acting training and an almost fresh screen image, Tom Francis looks like at least a very intriguing option.
For now, this is just talk.
But in the history of Bond, that is sometimes exactly how it all begins.
